This was praise, of all others most extraordinary, most opposite to her ideas. That he was not a good-tempered man had been her firmest opinion. Her keenest attention was awakened; she longed to hear more, and was grateful to her uncle for saying:

“Yes, sir, I know I am. If I were to go through the world, I could not meet with a better. But I have always observed, that they who are good-natured when children, are good-natured when they grow up; and he was always the sweetest-tempered, most generous-hearted boy in the world.”
“是的，先生，我也深知这一点。就是我走遍天下，也不会碰上一个更好的主人啦。我常说，孩子时候就心地善良，长大了也一定是善心肠的。达西先生从小就是那种脾气最好、肚量最大的孩子。”
Elizabeth almost stared at her. “Can this be Mr. Darcy?” thought she.
伊丽莎白几乎是瞪大了眼睛望着雷诺尔德夫人。“这可能是达西先生吗？”她私下想。
“His father was an excellent man,” said Mrs. Gardiner.
“他的父亲是一位德高望重的人。”嘉丁纳太太说。
“Yes, ma’am, that he was indeed; and his son will be just like him--just as affable to the poor.”
“是的，夫人，他的确是个大好人。他的儿子也正像他一样——对穷人体恤关照。”
Elizabeth listened, wondered, doubted, and was impatient for more. Mrs. Reynolds could interest her on no other point.
伊丽莎白聆听着，带着诧异，进而又带着疑虑，渴望再多听到一些。雷诺尔德夫人提到的别的东西都引不起她的兴趣。
She related the subjects of the pictures, the dimensions of the rooms, and the price of the furniture, in vain. Mr. Gardiner, highly amused by the kind of family prejudice to which he attributed her excessive commendation of her master, soon led again to the subject; and she dwelt with energy on his many merits as they proceeded together up the great staircase.
她谈到画像、房间的规格，家具的价钱，伊丽莎白都听不进去。嘉丁纳先生对女管家这样盛赞和偏爱她自家的主人，觉得很有趣，不久便又谈到了这个话题上。雷诺尔德夫人一面颇有兴致地谈着达西的许多优点，一面领着他们走上一段较长的楼梯。
“He is the best landlord, and the best master,” said she, “that ever lived; not like the wild young men nowadays, who think of nothing but themselves. There is not one of his tenants or servants but will give him a good name. Some people call him proud; but I am sure I never saw anything of it. To my fancy, it is only because he does not rattle away like other young men.”

“In what an amiable light does this place him!” thought Elizabeth.

“This fine account of him,” whispered her aunt as they walked, “is not quite consistent with his behaviour to our poor friend.”
“这番对达西的夸赞，”她舅母一边走，一边轻轻地说，“可与他对我们那位可怜的朋友的行为不相符。”
“Perhaps we might be deceived.”
“也许是我们受了蒙蔽。”
“That is not very likely; our authority was too good.”

On reaching the spacious lobby above they were shown into a very pretty sitting-room, lately fitted up with greater elegance and lightness than the apartments below; and were informed that it was but just done to give pleasure to Miss Darcy, who had taken a liking to the room when last at Pemberley.
他们走到楼上那个宽敞的过堂后，便被带进了一间非常漂亮的起居间，它比楼下的房间还要精美怡人，据说那是刚刚收恰好要给达西小姐用的，去年在彭伯里她就看中了这间屋子。
“He is certainly a good brother,” said Elizabeth, as she walked towards one of the windows.

Mrs. Reynolds anticipated Miss Darcy’s delight, when she should enter the room. “And this is always the way with him,” she added. “Whatever can give his sister any pleasure is sure to be done in a moment. There is nothing he would not do for her.”
雷诺尔德夫人说等达西小姐进到这间屋子时一定会感到惊喜的。“他一向都是这样，”她补充说，“只要是能叫他妹妹高兴的事，他总是马上去办的，世界上没有什么事情是他不愿意为妹妹做的。”
The picture-gallery, and two or three of the principal bedrooms, were all that remained to be shown.
再剩下要看的便只有画室和两三间主要的卧室了。
In the former were many good paintings; but Elizabeth knew nothing of the art; and from such as had been already visible below, she had willingly turned to look at some drawings of Miss Darcy’s, in crayons, whose subjects were usually more interesting, and also more intelligible.
画室里陈列着许多优美的油画。可是伊丽莎白一点儿也不懂艺术。只觉得这些画和楼下的也没有什么两样，于是她宁愿掉过头去看达西小姐用粉笔画的几张画，因为这些画的题材倒更容易懂，也更叫她觉得有趣。
In the gallery there were many family portraits, but they could have little to fix the attention of a stranger. Elizabeth walked in quest of the only face whose features would be known to her.
画室里也有许多他们家族成员的画像，可是这对一个陌生人来说实在不可能有什么兴趣。伊丽莎白在这其中寻找着她唯一熟悉的那张面孔。
At last it arrested her--and she beheld a striking resemblance to Mr. Darcy, with such a smile over the face as she remembered to have sometimes seen when he looked at her.
最后她终于看到了有张画像非常酷似达西先生本人，只见他脸上的笑容，正跟他打量她时所流露出的一样。
She stood several minutes before the picture, in earnest contemplation, and returned to it again before they quitted the gallery. Mrs. Reynolds informed them that it had been taken in his father’s lifetime.
她伫立在这张画像前仔细地端详了好几分钟，在临离开画室前她又踅回来看了一眼。雷诺尔德夫人告诉他们说，少爷的这张像还是他父亲在世时画的。
There was certainly at this moment, in Elizabeth’s mind, a more gentle sensation towards the original than she had ever felt at the height of their acquaintance.
刹那间，在伊丽莎白的心里不禁滋生了一种对画上这个人儿的亲切之感。这种感情是在他们以前的相识中从来没有过的。
The commendation bestowed on him by Mrs. Reynolds was of no trifling nature. What praise is more valuable than the praise of an intelligent servant?
雷诺尔德夫人对他的赞扬不可小视。什么样的称颂会比一个明达事理的下人的称颂更加可贵呢？
As a brother, a landlord, a master, she considered how many people’s happiness were in his guardianship!--How much of pleasure or pain was it in his power to bestow!--How much of good or evil must be done by him!
作为一个兄长，一个庄园主，一个主人，伊丽莎白心想，有多少人的幸福掌握在他手中！他手中的权力能使多少人快乐，又能使多少人痛苦！他可以行多少的善，也可以做多少的恶啊！
Every idea that had been brought forward by the housekeeper was favourable to his character, and as she stood before the canvas on which he was represented, and fixed his eyes upon herself, she thought of his regard with a deeper sentiment of gratitude than it had ever raised before; she remembered its warmth, and softened its impropriety of expression.
女管家提到的每一件事，都足以说明他品格的优秀。她站在这个人儿的画像前，望着他那双注视着她的眼睛，对他的钟情于她不由地产生了一种从未有过的感激之情。她回味着他那炽烈的情感，便宽宥了他在表达他的这份情意时表现出的无礼。
When all of the house that was open to general inspection had been seen, they returned downstairs, and, taking leave of the housekeeper, were consigned over to the gardener, who met them at the hall-door.
当所有能看的房间都参观完了以后，他们又走下楼来，告别了女管家，由候在大厅门口的园丁带他们出去。
As they walked across the hall towards the river, Elizabeth turned back to look again; her uncle and aunt stopped also, and while the former was conjecturing as to the date of the building, the owner of it himself suddenly came forward from the road, which led behind it to the stables.
他们穿过草地走向河边，伊丽莎白这时又掉过头来眺望，舅舅、舅妈也停了下来，哪知道就在她舅舅正推测着这房子的建筑年代的当儿，忽然房主人从一条通向马厩的路走过来。
They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was his appearance, that it was impossible to avoid his sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of both were overspread with the deepest blush.
他们之间相隔不过二十码，达西的出现又那么突然，不可能有躲避的时间。他们两个的目光立刻相遇了，两个人的脸颊顿时都涨得通红。
He absolutely started, and for a moment seemed immovable from surprise; but shortly recovering himself, advanced towards the party, and spoke to Elizabeth, if not in terms of perfect composure, at least of perfect civility.
达西先生吃惊不小，有片刻的工夫竟然愣在了那里。不过，他很快定下心来，走过来和伊丽莎白搭了话，语气之间即便不能说是十分镇定，至少表现得非常有礼。
She had instinctively turned away; but stopping on his approach, received his compliments with an embarrassment impossible to be overcome.
伊丽莎白一看见达西便不由自主地往回走，只是见人家走过来了，才不好意思地停住了脚步，无比尴尬地接受了人家的问候。
Had his first appearance, or his resemblance to the picture they had just been examining, been insufficient to assure the other two that they now saw Mr. Darcy, the gardener’s expression of surprise, on beholding his master, must immediately have told it.
至于舅舅和舅妈，如果说与达西先生的初次见面，或是达西与他们刚刚看过的画像的相似，还不足以叫他们相信面前这一位就是达西先生的话，他们从园丁见到主人时的惊讶表情上，也可以立刻断定了。
They stood a little aloof while he was talking to their niece, who, astonished and confused, scarcely dared lift her eyes to his face, and knew not what answer she returned to his civil enquiries after her family.
在他和他们的外甥女说话的时候，舅舅、舅妈稍稍站开了一点。伊丽莎白慌乱得连眼睛也不敢抬，对人家客客气气地问候她家人的话，她也不知道自己回答了些什么。
Amazed at the alteration of his manner since they last parted, every sentence that he uttered was increasing her embarrassment; and every idea of the impropriety of her being found there recurring to her mind, the few minutes in which they continued were some of the most uncomfortable in her life.
为上一次分手后他态度上的变化感到吃惊，他所说的每一句话都更加叫她感到局促不安。伊丽莎白满脑子想着的都是，自己闯到这里来被人家看到的这种不体面，他们俩在一起的这一会儿竟成了她生平最难熬的几分钟。
Nor did he seem much more at ease; when he spoke, his accent had none of its usual sedateness; and he repeated his enquiries as to the time of her having left Longbourn, and of her stay in Derbyshire, so often, and in so hurried a way, as plainly spoke the distraction of his thoughts.
达西先生的情况也好不了多少。在他说话的时候，他的语调里也少了平日的镇定。他把她是多会儿离开浪博恩的和她在德比郡已待了多长时间的问话，重复了好几遍，而且问得那么急促，这都说明他是怎样的心慌意乱了。
At length every idea seemed to fail him; and, after standing a few moments without saying a word, he suddenly recollected himself, and took leave.
