When Jean Valjean and Cosette left Montfermeil, Cosette did not look back.
冉阿让和珂赛特离开孟费村的时候，珂赛特没有回头望。
She never wanted to see Madame Thénardier again.
她再也不想见到德纳第夫人了。
She put her cold little hand into Valjean's great hand, and looked up into his face.
她把自己冰冷的小手放进冉阿让的大手里，抬头看着他的脸。
'Monsieur,' she said, 'can I... can I call you Father?'
“先生，”她说，“我能...我能叫你爸爸吗？”
Valjean looked down at her big round eyes. 'Yes,' he said.
冉阿让低头望着她那双圆圆的大眼睛。“可以。”他说。
He did not know love, he did not understand love, but in that moment, suddenly, he felt a father's love for this small child.
他不知道什么是爱，也不懂爱，可是在那一刻，他突然感受到了对这个小孩父亲般的爱。
'Yes,' he said again. 'Yes, you can call me Father. It's a good name.'
“可以，”他再次说道，“可以，你可以叫我爸爸。听起来真不错。”
Hand in hand, they walked away on the road to Paris.
他们手拉着手，上路往巴黎而去。
In Paris Cosette learnt to laugh, and to sing like a bird, and to be happy.
在巴黎，珂赛特学会了欢笑，学会了像小鸟一样歌唱，学会了快乐。
Jean Valjean learnt to be father and mother to this child, and he loved her dearly.
冉阿让学会了当起这个孩子的父母，他非常疼爱她。
But they lived quietly, moved house often, and only went out at night. Because Javert, too, was in Paris.
不过，他们过着不引人注意的生活，常常搬家，并且只在天黑之后外出。这都是因为沙威也在巴黎。
When Valjean escaped from Montreuil, Javert came to Paris to look for him.
冉阿让从蒙特勒伊逃走之后，沙威就来到巴黎追捕他。
He was now an important inspector in the Paris police. Every criminal in Paris was afraid of inspector Javert.
他现在是巴黎警局中一位重要的督察。巴黎的每个罪犯都害怕沙威督察。
Once, Valjean saw Javert by the river, and the next day he looked for a new place to live.
有一次，冉阿让在河边看见了沙威，他第二天就去找新住处。
He found one, behind the high walls of a girls' school.
他在一所女子学校的高墙内找到了住处。
The school gave Valjean a job as a gardener, and he lived in a little house in the big gardens.
学校雇了冉阿让当花匠，他就住进了大花园里的一座小屋。
Cosette lived in the school. But every day she came to the gardener's little house for one hour.
珂赛特住在学校里。不过，她每天都会到花匠的小屋呆一个小时。
They talked, and they sang, and they read books. It was the happiest hour in the day for her and for Jean Valjean.
他们一起聊天，一起唱歌，一起看书。对她和冉阿让来说，这是一天中最幸福的时光。
And so the years passed.
就这样，一年一年过去了。
