Chapter 4 In the Grandmother's Hut
第四章 在老奶奶家
Next morning Peter came again with his goats, and Heidi went up to the pasture with them.
第二天早晨，彼特带着羊群上山，于是小海蒂又和他们一起向牧场走上去。
This happened day after day, and in this healthy life Heidi grew stronger, and more sunburnt every day.
这样，日子一天天过去。小海蒂茁壮成长，每天都给晒得黑黑的，壮壮的。
Soon the autumn came and when the wind was blowing across the mountainside, the grandfather would say:
不久，秋天到了，从阿尔卑斯吹来的大风又开始呼啸起来。于是爷爷对小海蒂说：
"You must stay home today, Heidi, for the wind can blow such a little thing as you down into the valley with a single gust."
“今天就呆在家里吧，小海蒂，风这么大，像你这样的小孩子，一下就会被风吹到山谷下面去的。”
It always made Peter unhappy when Heidi did not come along, for he saw nothing but misfortunes ahead of him,
早晨，彼特听到这消息，便一副垂头丧气的样子，心想，这下今天肯定没意思了。
he hardly knew how to pass his time, and besides, he was deprived of his abundant dinner.
首先，没有小海蒂，真无聊得不知干点儿什么好。再有，午饭也没能大吃一顿，
The goats were so accustomed to Heidi by this time, that they did not follow Peter when she was not with him.
这些山羊已经和小海蒂很熟了，小海蒂不在，它们就不乖乖往前走。
Heidi herself did not mind staying at home, for she loved nothing better than to watch her grandfather with his saw and hammer.
海蒂并不介意待在家里。看爷爷拉锯或是用锤子敲敲打打地干木匠活也很有意思。
Sometimes the grandfather would make small round cheeses on those days,
有时候，爷爷会做圆圆的山羊奶酪。
and there was no greater pleasure for Heidi than to see him stir the butter with his bare arms.
对海蒂来说，没有什么比看到爷爷撸起袖子搅拌黄油更开心的了。
When the wind would howl through the fir-trees on those stormy days,
在那些暴风雨的日子里，风会咆哮着穿过枞树，
Heidi would run out to the grove, thrilled and happy by the wondrous roaring in the branches.
海蒂会跑到小树林里，被树枝上奇妙的呼啸声吓得又兴奋又开心。
The sun had lost its vigor, and the child had to put on her shoes and stockings and her little dress.
这个时候太阳已经不像夏天时晒得那么热，海蒂把袜子、鞋子和外衣都找出来穿上。
The weather got colder and colder, and when Peter came up in the morning, he would blow into his hands, he was so frozen.
不久，天气冷了，早晨上山来的彼特要不住地往两只手上呵气，他冻坏了。
At last even Peter could not come any more, for a deep snow had fallen over night.
一天晚上下了场很大的雪，这样一来，彼特不再上山了。
Heidi stood at the window, watching the snow falling down.
小海蒂透过窗户向外望去，雪又下起来，
It kept on snowing till it reached the windows,
一刻不停地落下，积到窗沿底下。
still it did not stop, and soon the windows could not be opened, and they were all shut in.
可雪还是不停，最后连窗户也完全打不开，两个人被堵在了屋子里。
When it had lasted for several days, Heidi thought that it would soon cover up the cottage.
雪下了好几天，海蒂以为它很快就会把小屋盖起来。
It finally stopped, and the grandfather went out to shovel the snow away from the door and windows, piling it up high here and there.
雪终于停了，爷爷到外面，在房子周围用铁锹铲雪，把雪堆得高高的，这一堆那一堆。
