Peter was quietly peeling his rod, and looking up, said to Heidi: "This is no fire, it always looks like that."
“经常是这样的嘛。”彼特抬头看了一眼，继续悠闲地剥他鞭子上的皮。“不是什么火灾。”
"But what is it then?" asked Heidi eagerly, gazing about her everywhere.
“那是什么？”海蒂喊，看看这，望望那。
"It gets that way of itself," explained Peter.
“自然而然就成这样了嘛。”
"Oh look! Everything is all rosy now!
“快看呐，一下子变成了玫瑰色！
Oh, look at this mountain over there with the snow and the sharp peaks. What is its name?"
瞧，那个积雪的、高高的、尖尖的山！它叫什么来着，彼特？”
"Mountains have no names," he answered.
“山还有什么名字吗？”
"Oh, see, how beautiful! It looks as if many, many roses were growing on those cliffs.
“啊，真美！就好像岩石上长了好多好多玫瑰花！
Oh, now they are getting grey.
哎，慢慢变成灰色了。
Oh dear! the fire has gone out and it is all over. What a terrible shame!" said Heidi quite despondently.
哎呀！火灭了，全不见了！太可惜了。”说完，海蒂一副失望的样子。
"It will be the same again tomorrow," Peter reassured her. "Come now, we have to go home."
“明天还会变成那样的。来，站起来吧，该回去了。”
When Peter had called the goats together, they started downwards.
彼特说完，用口哨和叫喊把羊群聚齐。然后，两个人走上回家的路。
"Will it be like that every day when we are up?" asked Heidi, eagerly.
“以后我们上山，总是能变成那样吗？”海蒂急切地问。
"It usually is," was the reply. "What about tomorrow?" she inquired.
“一般都是。”彼特回答。“明天肯定还有吧？”海蒂问。
"Tomorrow it will be like that, I am sure," Peter affirmed. That made Heidi feel happy again.
“是啊，明天一定有！”彼特一口咬定。一听这句话海蒂又高兴起来。
She walked quietly by Peter's side, thinking over all the new things she had seen.
她静静地走在彼特身边，回想着她所看到的一切新事物。
At last, reaching the hut, they found the grandfather waiting for them on a bench under the fir-trees.
下山来到小屋时，爷爷已经拿出椅子坐在枞树下等他们了。
Heidi ran up to him and the two goats followed, for they knew their master.
小海蒂快步跑到他跟前，后面跟着“天鹅”和“小熊”。它们都认识自己的小屋和主人。
Peter called to her: "Come again tomorrow! Good-night!"
这时，彼特从后面招呼说：“明天还来啊，再见。”
Heidi gave him her hand, assuring him that she would come, and finding herself surrounded by the goats, she hugged Snowhopper a last time.
海蒂马上又跑回来和彼特握手，约定好明天一定再去。然后跑到正要离开的羊群里，又一次抱住“小雪”的头。
When Peter had disappeared, Heidi returned to her grandfather. "Oh grandfather! it was so beautiful!
彼特离开了，小海蒂又回头到枞树下面，跑到爷爷跟前就大声喊：“爷爷，太美了！
I saw the fire and the roses on the rocks! And see the many, many flowers I am bringing you!"
我看到大石头上火红火红的，还有玫瑰花。快看，我带了好多好多花给你呢！”
With that Heidi shook them out of her apron.
说着，小海蒂把包在围裙里的花打开给他看。
But oh, how miserable they looked! Heidi did not even know them any more.
可是，花儿们的样子再惨不过了！没有一枝还能认出是花来。
"What is the matter with them, grandfather? They looked so different!" Heidi exclaimed in her fright.
“咦，爷爷，这是怎么回事？”小海蒂大吃一惊，叫嚷起来。“怎么会变成这副样子呢？”
"They are made to bloom in the sun and not to be shut up in an apron," said the grandfather.
“花是喜欢在外面被太阳公公照着的呀，它们不喜欢呆在围裙里。”爷爷说。
