Every object in the next day’s journey was new and interesting to Elizabeth; and her spirits were in a state of enjoyment; for she had seen her sister looking so well as to banish all fear for her health, and the prospect of her northern tour was a constant source of delight.

When they left the high road for the lane to Hunsford, every eye was in search of the Parsonage, and every turning expected to bring it in view.

The palings of Rosings Park was their boundary on one side. Elizabeth smiled at the recollection of all that she had heard of its inhabitants.

At length the Parsonage was discernible.
最后，那幢牧师住宅总算映入了眼帘。
The garden sloping to the road, the house standing in it, the green pales, and the laurel hedge, everything declared they were arriving.
高出街面的花园，花园里的房子，绿色的栅栏和桂树篱笆，这一切都在宣布他们就要到了。
Mr. Collins and Charlotte appeared at the door, and the carriage stopped at the small gate which led by a short gravel walk to the house, amidst the nods and smiles of the whole party.
科林斯先生和夏洛特出现在了门口，马车停在一道小门跟前，从这里穿过一条不长的鹅卵石铺道便能抵达正屋，客人们在主家这方的招手和微笑中下了车子。
In a moment they were all out of the chaise, rejoicing at the sight of each other. Mrs. Collins welcomed her friend with the liveliest pleasure, and Elizabeth was more and more satisfied with coming when she found herself so affectionately received.
宾主相见，格外喜悦，科林斯太太兴高采烈地迎接她朋友的到来，伊丽莎白见自己受到这么热情的接待，便越发满意这次的做客了。
She saw instantly that her cousin’s manners were not altered by his marriage; his formal civility was just what it had been, and he detained her some minutes at the gate to hear and satisfy his enquiries after all her family.
伊丽莎白很快发现，她表哥的举止并没有因为结婚而有所改变，他的过分客气的礼节还像从前一样，这让她在大门口耽搁了好几分钟，倾听和回答他对她全家人的问候和挂念。
They were then, with no other delay than his pointing out the neatness of the entrance, taken into the house; and as soon as they were in the parlour, he welcomed them a second time, with ostentatious formality to his humble abode, and punctually repeated all his wife’s offers of refreshment.
之后客人们只是在他夸赞门口的整洁时稍事耽搁了一下，便被带进了屋子。待客人们到了客厅后科林斯又一次非常客气地欢迎他们，说他们光临寒舍，使他荣幸之至，并且一次又一次地把他太太端上来的点心及时地敬给大家。
Elizabeth was prepared to see him in his glory; and she could not help in fancying that in displaying the good proportion of the room, its aspect and its furniture, he addressed himself particularly to her, as if wishing to make her feel what she had lost in refusing him.
伊丽莎白对看到科林斯这副春风得意的样子，早有思想准备。她不由地想在他夸示房屋的宽敞、式样以及家具陈设时，他尤其是说给她听的，像是存心要让她体味到，她当初拒绝他是个多么大的损失。
But though everything seemed neat and comfortable, she was not able to gratify him by any sigh of repentance, and rather looked with wonder at her friend that she could have so cheerful an air with such a companion.

When Mr. Collins said anything of which his wife might reasonably be ashamed, which certainly was not unseldom, she involuntarily turned her eye on Charlotte.

Once or twice she could discern a faint blush; but in general Charlotte wisely did not hear.

After sitting long enough to admire every article of furniture in the room, from the sideboard to the fender, to give an account of their journey, and of all that had happened in London, Mr. Collins invited them to take a stroll in the garden, which was large and well laid out, and to the cultivation of which he attended himself.
客人们坐了下来开始夸赞起屋里的每一件家具，从食器橱到壁炉架，样样什物都点到了，跟着又谈起他们这次的旅行和在伦敦逗留期间发生的事情，在这样聊了不小的工夫后，科林斯请他们到花园里散步。花园很大，布置得也挺好，这里的植物树木都是他亲手栽种的。
To work in this garden was one of his most respectable pleasures; and Elizabeth admired the command of countenance with which Charlotte talked of the healthfulness of the exercise, and owned she encouraged it as much as possible.
料理花园是他的一大乐趣。伊丽莎白很佩服夏洛特的镇定自若，在谈起这些劳作有益于健康、是她尽可能地鼓励科林斯如此去做时，脸上也毫无难色。
Here, leading the way through every walk and cross walk, and scarcely allowing them an interval to utter the praises he asked for, every view was pointed out with a minuteness which left beauty entirely behind.
科林斯领着客人们走进了花园里的曲径小道，一面滔滔不绝地解说，几乎容不得客人们插进去一句他想要听的赞美词，每一处景观都被他烦琐的解释减色不少。
He could number the fields in every direction, and could tell how many trees there were in the most distant clump.

But of all the views which his garden, or which the country or kingdom could boast, none were to be compared with the prospect of Rosings, afforded by an opening in the trees that bordered the park nearly opposite the front of his house.
不过，他花园里的这些景观，或者说这整个乡村乃至全国可以值得称道的景观，都不能和罗新斯花园的景色相比。罗新斯庄园差不多就在他住宅的正对面，它门前有一片很开阔的地势，种满了树木。
It was a handsome modern building, well situated on rising ground.
越过树木便是花园了，在花园里的一片高地上耸立着一幢漂亮的近代建筑。
From his garden, Mr. Collins would have led them round his two meadows; but the ladies, not having shoes to encounter the remains of a white frost, turned back; and while Sir William accompanied him, Charlotte took her sister and friend over the house, extremely well pleased, probably, to have the opportunity of showing it without her husband’s help.
从花园这里，他本来还要带大家到两个草坪走走，女士们却由于脚上的鞋子不堪踩那清晨残留下的霜露而踅了回来。在威廉爵士陪他前往的当儿，夏洛特陪着她的妹妹和朋友回到了屋子里，也许是因为没有丈夫的掺和能让她自己有机会来夸示一下她的屋子了，夏洛特这时特别的兴奋。
It was rather small, but well built and convenient; and everything was fitted up and arranged with a neatness and consistency of which Elizabeth gave Charlotte all the credit.
房间很小，但结构精巧，使用也很方便。一切都收拾得井井有条，样样都布置得很得当，伊丽莎白夸赞这都是夏洛特的功劳。
When Mr. Collins could be forgotten, there was really an air of great comfort throughout, and by Charlotte’s evident enjoyment of it, Elizabeth supposed he must be often forgotten.
在科林斯能被她们忘掉时，这儿就真正有了一种非常融洽的气氛，看到夏洛特此时的欢悦神情，伊丽莎白心里想，他在他妻子的心目中一定不占据什么位置。
She had already learnt that Lady Catherine was still in the country. It was spoken of again while they were at dinner, when Mr. Collins joining in, observed:

“Yes, Miss Elizabeth, you will have the honour of seeing Lady Catherine de Bourgh on the ensuing Sunday at church, and I need not say you will be delighted with her.

She is all affability and condescension, and I doubt not but you will be honoured with some portion of her notice when service is over.

I have scarcely any hesitation in saying she will include you and my sister Maria in every invitation with which she honours us during your stay here.

Her behaviour to my dear Charlotte is charming. We dine at Rosings twice every week, and are never allowed to walk home.

Her ladyship’s carriage is regularly ordered for us. I should say, one of her ladyship’s carriages, for she has several.”

“Lady Catherine is a very respectable, sensible woman indeed,” added Charlotte, “and a most attentive neighbour.”

“Very true, my dear, that is exactly what I say. She is the sort of woman whom one cannot regard with too much deference.”

The evening was spent chiefly in talking over Hertfordshire news, and telling again what had already been written; and when it closed, Elizabeth, in the solitude of her chamber, had to meditate upon Charlotte’s degree of contentment, to understand her address in guiding, and composure in bearing with, her husband, and to acknowledge that it was all done very well.
这一晚上宾主们主要是谈论哈福德郡那边的情况，也把以前信上写过的话儿重提了一提。大家散了以后，伊丽莎白回到她的房里，不由得在想夏洛特对自己的婚姻到底会满意到什么程度，她能理解夏洛特有所掩饰的谈吐，理解她在容忍丈夫的那些可笑行为时表现出的镇静，同时她也不得不承认夏洛特的这一切都做得很高明。
She had also to anticipate how her visit would pass, the quiet tenor of their usual employments, the vexatious interruptions of Mr. Collins, and the gaieties of their intercourse with Rosings. A lively imagination soon settled it all.
伊丽莎白也不由得预想到她的这次访问将会如何度过：她们像以往那样平静地谈话和闲聊，科林斯先生惹人讨厌地插进来搅和，以及跟罗新斯的那种热闹的应酬往来。她生动的想象力一下子便把这次访问的情景概览无遗了。
About the middle of the next day, as she was in her room getting ready for a walk, a sudden noise below seemed to speak the whole house in confusion; and, after listening a moment, she heard somebody running up stairs in a violent hurry, and calling loudly after her. She opened the door and met Maria in the landing place, who, breathless with agitation, cried out--
第二天中午，她正要走出自己的房间到外面散步，楼下突然传来的一阵嘈杂声，似乎把整幢房子都搅扰了。在仔细地听了一会儿后，她听到有人急匆匆地跑上楼来，大声地喊着她的名字。她打开了房门，在楼梯口遇见了玛丽亚，只见她激动得气喘吁吁的，嘴里嚷着：
“Oh, my dear Eliza! Pray make haste and come into the dining-room, for there is such a sight to be seen! I will not tell you what it is. Make haste, and come down this moment.”
“噢，我亲爱的伊丽莎白！请赶紧到餐厅，那里有个了不起的场面值得看呢！我不告诉你是怎么回事。快一点儿，现在就下楼来。”
Elizabeth asked questions in vain; Maria would tell her nothing more, and down they ran into the dining-room, which fronted the lane, in quest of this wonder; It was two ladies stopping in a low phaeton at the garden gate.
伊丽莎白想问个究竟也是白搭。玛丽亚多一句也不愿意吐露，她们俩跑到了那间临着街巷的餐厅里，去看个究竟。原来是两位女士乘着一辆低低的四轮马车，停在了花园门口。
“And is this all?” cried Elizabeth. “I expected at least that the pigs were got into the garden, and here is nothing but Lady Catherine and her daughter.”
“就是这事吗？”伊丽莎白大声地问，“我还以为有猪跑进花园里了，这不就是凯瑟琳夫人和她的女儿嘛。”
“La! My dear,” said Maria, quite shocked at the mistake, “it is not Lady Catherine. The old lady is Mrs. Jenkinson, who lives with them; the other is Miss de Bourgh. Only look at her. She is quite a little creature. Who would have thought that she could be so thin and small?”
“瞧你，亲爱的，”玛丽亚听她说错了，吃惊地说，“那不是凯瑟琳夫人。那位老的是姜金生夫人，她跟她们住在一起。另外的那一位是德·包尔小姐。你瞧瞧她那副模样。她长得多么娇小。谁能想到她的身体竟会这么单薄、这么娇小呢！”
“She is abominably rude to keep Charlotte out of doors in all this wind. Why does she not come in?”
“在这样的大风天气里，她叫夏洛特一直待在门外，未免有点儿太失礼貌了。她为什么不能进来呢？”
“Oh, Charlotte says she hardly ever does. It is the greatest of favours when Miss de Bourgh comes in.”
“哦，夏洛特说，她很少进来过。如果德·包尔小姐进屋来，那可就是极大的恩宠了。”
“I like her appearance,” said Elizabeth, struck with other ideas. “She looks sickly and cross. Yes, she will do for him very well. She will make him a very proper wife.”
“我喜欢她有这样的一副模样儿，”此时的伊丽莎白似乎突然想到了什么，不禁这样说道，“她看上去病恹恹的，脾性也火爆。呃，她要嫁给达西，那真是再好不过了。她做他的妻子太合适了。”
Mr. Collins and Charlotte were both standing at the gate in conversation with the ladies; and Sir William, to Elizabeth’s high diversion, was stationed in the doorway, in earnest contemplation of the greatness before him, and constantly bowing whenever Miss de Bourgh looked that way.
科林斯和夏洛特站在门口跟那两位女士说着话。让伊丽莎白更感到有趣的是，威廉爵士立在门廊里的那副模样，只见他聚精会神地端详着他面前的这些大人物，只要德·包尔小姐一朝这边看，他便不住地鞠躬示意。
At length there was nothing more to be said; the ladies drove on, and the others returned into the house. Mr. Collins no sooner saw the two girls than he began to congratulate them on their good fortune, which Charlotte explained by letting them know that the whole party was asked to dine at Rosings the next day.
等话说完了以后，两位女士乘车而去，别的人也都回到了房里，科林斯先生一见到两位小姐，便向她们祝贺她俩的好运。夏洛特上来向她俩解释说，罗新斯的主人明天要请他们全体去吃饭了。
