Aleppo: From commercial hub to war zone
The central prison in Aleppo comes under attack. The video, which can not be independently verified by Reuters comes amid reports that an Islamist group has taken over a large part of the prison, freeing hundreds, and killing and wounding dozens of members of Syria's security forces. Aleppo, once Syria's commercial hub, has been the scene of fierce fighting as rebel groups join forces to launch an assault called, "The Just Promise Approaches." This follows a series of attacks by President Bashar al-Assad's forces, using so-called barrel bombs. Rebels are warning residents near government checkpoints and bases to clear the areas -- saying the facilities would be the insurgents' main targets. Assad's forces have been making small gains on rebel-held parts of Aleppo -- advances which many opposition sources blame on weeks of rebel infighting that left more than 2,300 combatants dead.

Turkey scrambles an F-16 fighter jet to accompany a passenger plane arriving in Istanbul from Ukraine Friday after a bomb threat was made by a passenger demanding to go to the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Local media is reporting that the passenger is believed to have drunk alcohol and was calmed down by the crew and the plane landed safely in Istanbul Friday evening. An official from Turkey's transport ministry said there were 110 passengers on board and confirmed that a bomb threat had been made.
Busloads of Syrians evacuate Homs
Busloads of civilians living in the Syrian city of Homs are being evacauted, in what is the first stage of a three-day humanitarian ceasefire. The beseiged city has experienced some of the worst devastation in the nearly three year old civil war that has killed 130,000 people. A dutch priest living in Homs is making an appeal for more help.

U.N. peace talks two weeks ago yielded the first positive results between the warring sides in the conflict. Perhaps that will calm the growling stomachs of those who are stuck in the crossfire. But there's little sign that the ceasefire will resolve the fundamental grievances a civil war that has left Homs in ruins.
