The former U.S. astronaut was the first man to set foot on the moon on July 20th, 1969 He was once asked how he felt knowing his footprints would likely stay on the moon's surface for thousands of years. He said,: "I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up," he said. The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on Aug. 5, to relieve blocked coronary arteries. His family released a statement saying: "We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures," the family said in a statement. "Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

TEXT:Flames burn brightly here at Venezuela's largest oil refinery in the nation's worst industrial accident in memory. On Saturday, a deadly explosion ripped through the facility triggered by a gas leak, killing at least 39 people and wounding dozens more. A day later, firefighters had the blaze under control, prompting crews to begin the massive task of getting the refinery back online. The explosion comes after years fraught with repeated accidents and outages at plants run by state oil producer PDVSA. Some residents nearby worried about the potential for even worse incidents. NELLY DA LUGO, RESIDENT SAYING: "PDVSA should buy all of these houses and get us out of this community because we are at a very high risk here. We are the most affected in this community not only because of the gases but also all the other things the refinery puts out." Critics blame the poor management on Hugo Chavez's government just ahead of October elections. Venezuela is a top oil supplier for the United States and Caribbean area.

TEXT:South Koreans stake their claim on a disputed island by playing a game of basketball. The islands, called Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, lie equi-distant from the two mainlands. They are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars. Tension between the North Asian countries, flared earlier this month after South Korean's President became the first South Korean leader to set foot on the islands claimed by both countries. The Korean Basketball Association adopted a different approach LEE JONG-GUL, PRESIDENT OF KOREA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION, SAYING: "We are sportsmen, who are protesting in the most peaceful and dignified way. Basketball is a sport as well as a peaceful diplomat. Today, we played the basketball on Dokdo and clearly showed that this is our territory." The tournament was the second basketball tournament held on the island by South Korea. The previous one was held in August last year.

TEXT:A charred truck - the remains of a blockade in Mexico's second city of Guadalajara after a dramatic shootout between federal police and suspected gang members. Armed assailants set cars, buses and trailers on fire as they paralysed more than 20 roads across the city in the state of Jalisco. With the attack bearing all the hallmarks of drug gangs, many suspect the blockades to be cartel related. Jalisco's minister of public security told a news conference that locals were caught off guard by the events. He said federal authorities did not alert local officials to the possibility of a blockade as on previous occasions. Three police officers were wounded but no arrests have been made. More than 55,000 people have been killed across Mexico in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon came to power in 2006 and declared war on the cartels.
