TEXT:he area outside Syria's National Security headquarters, where a suicide bomb killed key figures of Bashar al-Assad's government. Defence Minister Daoud Rajha, seen here, was killed in the attack at a meeting of ministers and security officials in Damascus, according to state TV. Assef Shawkat, Assad's brother in-law, was also killed, and Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar was among the wounded, state TV reported. The bombing took place on a fourth straight day of fighting in the capital, said to be seen here in amateur video that Reuters cannot independently verify mainly due to Syrian media restrictions. The Free Syrian Army and Liwa al-Islam, an Islamist rebel group, have both claimed responsibility for the explosion. One security source said the suicide bomber was a bodyguard assigned to Assad's inner circle. It was not clear whether Assad himself was present. The bombing is the most serious blow to Assad's high command since anti-government revolts began 16 months ago. Sarah Sheffer, Reuters

TEXT:Thousands of people in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos are homeless after the city tore down a sprawling shanty town. Makoko slum was home to nearly 10,000 people who lived in shacks built on stilts over a lagoon. Distraught residents watched as officials used power saws and gasoline to remove their homes. One woman said her belongings were tossed into the water and her children had gone missing. Most of the residents said they were unprepared even though officials said they'd been given 72 hours to evacuate. Pascal Agosu, a university student, grew up here and said in tearing it down, the government showed a blatant disregard for human rights. AN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS STUDENT AT LAGOS UNIVERSITY, PASCAL AGOSU, SAYING: "Now the question is if the government want to make use of this place, why can't government inform these people officially or does that mean these people, they are no people at all." Government officials say the demolition is part of a campaign to clean up the city. They expect the population to more than double over the next decade from 16 million to 40 million. 4【China, Russia veto U.N. Syria resolution】中俄否决联合国涉叙决议
TEXT:At the United Nations, Russia and China vetoed a Security Council resolution threatening sanctions on Syria. The plan also would extend a monitoring mission inside the country. Reactions from western powers was swift. Britain's ambassador to the United Nations. MARK LYALL GRANT, BRITISH AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS, SAYING: "The United Kingdom is appalled by the decision of Russia and China to veto this draft resolution aimed at bringing an end to the bloodshed in Syria and to create the conditions for meaningful political progress. More than 14,000 innocent Syrians have been killed since Russia and China first vetoed our efforts to stem the violence in October last year. Since then the regime has intensified its use of heavy weapons in population centers, including the use of artillery and helicopter gunships. More than 100 civilians are being killed every day. The events in Damascus over the last 48 hours demonstrate the need for urgent and decisive action by the Security Council U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice. SUSAN RICE, UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS, SAYING: "The Security Council has failed utterly in its most important task on its agenda this year. This is another dark day in Turtle Bay. One can only hope that one day ,before too many thousands more die,let Russia and China will stop protecting al-Assad and allow this council to play its proper role. Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churchkin. SOUNDBTIE: VITALY CHURKIN, RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS, SAYING: "The sponsors of this project that just failed have attempted to fan the flames of confrontation in the Security Council. The draft which was just voted on was biased. The threats of sanctions were leveled exclusively at the government of Syria. This runs counter to the spirit of the Geneva document and does not reflect the realities in the country today." It's the third time the Russia and China have vetoed resolutions targeting President Bashar al-Assad, seen here for the first time since several members of his inner circle were killed. Deborah Gembara, Reuters.
