1【The battle for control in Syria】叙利亚的争夺之战

TEXT:Amateur video out of Syria shows Free Syrian army fighters driving through the streets of Aleppo. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes amid reports of fierce fighting around intelligence headquarters in the city. More footage purportedly from eastern Syria shows homes turned to rubble in Deir al-Zor. The bombardments in Damascus and Deir al-Zor are some of the fiercest yet showing President Bashar al-Assad's determination to avenge a bomb on Wednesday that killed four members of his high command. On Sunday a Syrian rebel group releases footage of what they say was Wednesday's attack.A man can be heard saying that the attack was carried out using explosives devices placed inside the building. Meanwhile rebels continue to celebrate after capturing another border crossing into Turkey. They tear up pictures of Assad. A Turkish border official confirmed that the crossing was in rebel hands. He said that the remained open but there was no sign of traffic. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters

2【Explosives from shooting suspect's home detonated】丹佛枪击案嫌疑犯家中爆炸物被引爆
TEXT:Holmes - the man accused of shooting dead 12 people at a movie theatre in Aurora. Bomb experts used a robot to enter the Colorado apartment, which had been rigged with 30 explosive devices. The authorities say if detonated, they could have blown up the entire three-story building. The last devices were safely removed on Saturday (July 21) afternoon. They were driven to a remote area near Aurora and detonated in controlled explosions. As the police investigation continues, the authorities are working to preserve any evidence in the apartment. They hope it may shed light on the motives of a crime that's stunned the nation. Sarah Charlton, Reuters.

3【Denver shooting raises gun law questions】丹佛枪击案引发枪支法律问题
TEXT:America is coming to terms with tragedy. During a midnight showing of the new "Batman" film, a gunman opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others. CHRIS RAMOS, WITNESS, SAYING: "He started shooting at everyone. He didn't care who it was. He was shooting for a minute and a half, two minutes, it felt like it was going on forever. He shot, shot, shot, reloaded, he kept on shooting. Everyone was trying to escape, just following their basic, survival instinct." Suspect James Eagan Holmes was armed with an assault rifle, shotgun and pistol. Another handgun was found in his car. All guns were bought legally. But while it may spark fresh soul-searching on America's relationship with arms - few predict any real change in the law. Just 17 miles away is the site of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, where two students killed 13 people. While the latest tragedy may evoke memories, many continue defend their right to bear arms. RICHARD TAYLOR, FIRING LINE GUN STORE MANAGER, SAYING: "I don't think a complete ban on firearms will take away firearms from everybody or have prevented the tragedy. He would have probably found some other way, he may have taken a five gallon can of gas into the theatre and set fire to it, who knows." President Barack Obama and others have expressed their sorrow at the massacre. But they have yet to say anything about gun control. Advocates have largely lost the argument against America's powerful gun lobby. And politicians know the issue is toxic with voters. Sarah Charlton, Reuters.

4【Latest solar flare dazzling but not dangerous】最新太阳耀斑虽耀眼但并不危险
TEXT:Thursday's flare was the latest in a series of solar eruptions captured by NASA's orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory. Classified as a moderate M class flare, it lasted for about 45 minutes, ejecting billions of charged particles into space in a coronal mass ejection. M class flares are not as powerful as the X class, but can still emit enough electro-magnetic radiation to disrupt radio and satellite communications on Earth. This time however, scientists say the charged particles were directed away from Earth and don't pose a threat. The observatory's five year mission began in February of 2010. The SDO is equipped with four telescopes that can observe and transmit highly detailed images of the sun in a variety of wavelengths. The sun's 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which means flares are likely to increase before the cycle reaches its peak in 2013. NASA says its observatory will be providing an uninterrupted view of all solar activity until the SDO mission ends in three years. Kilmeny Duchardt, Reuters.
