Chapter Sixteen Farewell to Shadowlands
第十六章 告别虚幻之境
If one could run without getting tired, I don't think one would often want to do anything else.
如果一个人在奔跑时感觉不到疲惫的话，我并不认为他会想停下来做别的事。
But there might be special reasons for stopping, and it was a special reason which made Eustace presently shout: "I say! Steady! Look what we're coming to!" And well he might.
但是，如果是一群人奔跑时突然停下脚步，也许是有特殊的理由，而这个理由也是让尤斯塔斯大叫的原因：“听我说！别跑了！看看我们来到哪儿了！”他们真的停下来了。
For now they saw before them Caldron Pool and beyond the Pool the high unclimbable cliffs and, pouring down the cliffs, thousands of tons of water every second,
因为现在，大家看到了眼前的大锅水潭，水潭之上是难以逾越的悬崖峭壁，每秒钟会有几千吨水倾泻而下，这就是大瀑布啊。
flashing like diamonds in some places and dark, glassy green in others, the Great Waterfall; and already the thunder of it was in their ears.
远观大瀑布，有些地方的水像钻石一般璀璨闪耀，而有些地方的水就像玻璃一般是暗绿色的，瀑布之声如雷鸣般响亮。
"Don't stop! Further up and further in," called Farsight, tilting his flight a little upwards.
“别停啊！往更高处攀登，向更深处挺进。”老鹰呼喊着，在大家的斜上方飞着。
"It's all very well for him," said Eustace, but Jewel also cried out: "Don't stop. Further up and further in! Take it in your stride."
“对它来说怎么都好。”尤斯塔斯说道。在一旁的珠尔也大呼：“别停啊——往更高处攀登，向更深处挺进！大步前进的时候要好好琢磨这句话。”
His voice could only just be heard above the roar of the water but next moment everyone saw that he had plunged into the Pool.
瀑布的咆哮声太大，大家只能勉强听到珠尔的声音。不过一会儿工夫，大家就看到珠尔一头扎进了水潭。
And helter-skelter behind him, with splash after splash, all the others did the same.
而在它之后，其他人也慌慌张张地一个接着一个地跳了进去，水花不断溅起。
The water was not bitingly cold as all of them (and especially Puzzle) expected, but of a delicious foamy coolness.
水并没有大家（特别是困惑）想象中的那么冷，而是泛着泡沫，凉快而舒爽。
They all found they were swimming straight for the Waterfall itself. "This is absolutely crazy," said Eustace to Edmund. "I know. And yet-" said Edmund.
他们都发现自己正笔直地游向了瀑布。“这真是疯狂啊！”尤斯塔斯对爱德蒙说道。“我知道，但是……”爱德蒙说。
"Isn't it wonderful?" said Lucy. "Have you noticed one can't feel afraid, even if one wants to? Try it." "By Jove, neither one can," said Eustace after he had tried.
“这不是很不可思议吗？”露茜说道，“你有没有注意到，即使有哪一个人想感到害怕，都不会有那样的感觉？你试试。”“天啊，真是这样。”尤斯塔斯试过后说道。
Jewel reached the foot of the Waterfall first, but Tirian was only just behind him. Jill was last, so she could see the whole thing better than the others.
珠尔率先抵达瀑布下，而蒂廉紧随其后。吉尔是最后一个到的，因此，比起其他人，她能够把一切看得更加清楚。
She saw something white moving steadily up the face of the Waterfall. That white thing was the Unicorn.
她看见有个白色的东西在瀑布的面上稳稳移动着，那白色的东西正是独角兽珠尔。
You couldn't tell whether he was swimming or climbing, but he moved on, higher and higher.
吉尔搞不明白珠尔是在游泳还是在爬行，但它就是往上面移动着，而且越来越高。
The point of his horn divided the water just above his head, and it cascaded out in two rainbow-coloured streams all round his shoulders. Just behind him came King Tirian.
它的兽角顶端正好将头顶上的水分割开来，变成两股五彩斑斓的水流绕过它的双肩倾泻而下。紧随其后的是蒂廉。
He moved his legs and arms as if he were swimming but he moved straight upwards: as if one could swim up the wall of a house. What looked funniest was the Dogs.
他的双腿和双臂划动着，就好像在游泳一般，但他却是在笔直地往上移动，这情景就好像他在攀登房子的墙。而看上去最滑稽的要属狗儿们了。
During the gallop they had not been at all out of breath, but now, as they swarmed and wriggled upwards, there was plenty of spluttering and sneezing among them;
奔跑的时候，它们根本就不累不喘，但是现在，它们挤在一块儿，向上缓缓扭动身体，抢着说了好多话，还打着喷嚏。
that was because they would keep on barking, and every time they barked they got their mouths and noses full of water.
因为它们会一直吠叫，每叫一次，它们的嘴和鼻子就会灌满水。
But before Jill had time to notice all these things fully, she was going up the Waterfall herself. It was the sort of thing that would have been quite impossible in our world.
但是还没等吉尔完全注意到这些事的时候，她就自己一个人游到了大瀑布的顶上。要是在旧时的纳尼亚，这种事情绝对不可能发生。
Even if you hadn't been drowned, you would have been smashed to pieces by the terrible weight of water against the countless jags of rock. But in that world you could do it.
瀑布急速流下，擦过岩石无数的突起之处，就算你没被淹死，也会让那可怕的重力弄得粉身碎骨了。但是在现在这个纳尼亚，你却能够完好无损地攀到瀑布之上。
You went on, up and up, with all kinds of reflected lights flashing at you from the water and all manner of coloured stones flashing through it, till it seemed as if you were climbing up light itself-
你向上移动着、攀登着，越来越高，越来越高。形形色色的彩色石头在水中闪闪发光，各种各样的反射光芒透过水照在了你的身上，看起来就好像正在攀登一道光束。
and always higher and higher till the sense of height would have terrified you if you could be terrified, but later it was only gloriously exciting.
你攀爬到了越来越高的地方，如果你恐高的话，那高度会让你感到害怕，不过之后你就只会感到无比兴奋了。
And then at last one came to the lovely, smooth green curve in which the water poured over the top and found that one was out on the level river above the Waterfall.
而最终，他们都攀上了顶端，有人看到了一道美丽可爱而又碧翠青绿的弧线——那是河水突然遇到断层跌落而下的地方。这时，吉尔才发现自己已经在瀑布之上那平缓的河流上了。
The current was racing away behind you, but you were such a wonderful swimmer that you could make headway against it. Soon they were all on the bank, dripping but happy.
湍急的水流在她身后全速俯冲而下。但是吉尔是个非同寻常的游泳健将，她能够逆着流水的方向勇往直前。很快，蒂廉他们全都上了岸，浑身淌着水，心情却很愉快。
A long valley opened ahead and great snow-mountains, now much nearer, stood up against the sky. "Further up and further in," cried Jewel and instantly they were off again.
一条长长的溪谷延伸开去，还有那些巨大的雪山，它们离大伙儿近了很多，高耸入云。“向着更高处攀登，往更深处挺进。”珠尔大声呼喊道，接着他们又再次出发了。
They were out of Narnia now and up into the Western Wild which neither Tirian nor Peter nor even the Eagle had ever seen before. But the Lord Digory and the Lady Polly had.
现在，他们已经出了纳尼亚，进入了西部荒野，蒂廉和彼得都没有见过那个地方，甚至连老鹰也未曾见到过。但是狄哥里殿下和波莉女士去过那儿。
"Do you remember? Do you remember?" they said-and said it in steady voices too, without panting, though the whole party was now running faster than an arrow flies.
“你还记得吗？你还记得吗？”狄哥里殿下对波莉女士说着，还都是用平稳的语调在说，没有大口地喘气。尽管现在，整个队伍奔跑的速度比射出去的箭还要快呢。
"What, Lord?" said Tirian. "Is it then true, as stories tell, that you two journeyed here on the very day the world was made?"
“什么，殿下？”蒂廉问道，“故事里说，你们两位在世界伊始那天游历到了这儿，那是真的吗？”
"Yes," said Digory, "and it seems to me as if it were only yesterday." "And on a flying horse?" asked Tirian. "Is that part true?"
“是真的，”狄哥里殿下说道，“对于我来说，那事儿好像就发生在昨天。”“骑着一匹飞马？”蒂廉问道，“这也是真的吗？”
"Certainly," said Digory. But the Dogs barked, "Faster, faster!" So they ran faster and faster till it was more like flying than running, and even the Eagle overhead was going no faster than they.
“当然了。”狄哥里殿下说道。但是狗儿们却吠叫道：“快点儿，快点儿！”因此他们跑得越来越快，与其说是跑，还不如说是在飞，甚至连他们头上的老鹰也没有他们的速度快。
