As to all the disputes, wrangling, strife, and contention which have happened in the world about religion, whether niceties in doctrines or schemes of church government, they were all perfectly useless to us, and, for aught I can yet see, they have been so to the rest of the world.
至于世界上所发生的一切有关宗教的争执、纠缠、斗争和辩论，无论是教义上微细的分别，还是教会行政上的种种计谋，对我们来说，都毫无用处。并且，在我看来，对世界上其他人也毫无用处。
We had the sure guide to heaven, viz. the Word of God; and we had, blessed be God, comfortable views of the Spirit of God teaching and instructing by His word, leading us into all truth, and making us both willing and obedient to the instruction of His word.

And I cannot see the least use that the greatest knowledge of the disputed points of religion, which have made such confusion in the world, would have been to us, if we could have obtained it.

But I must go on with the historical part of things, and take every part in its order.

After Friday and I became more intimately acquainted, and that he could understand almost all I said to him, and speak pretty fluently, though in broken English, to me, I acquainted him with my own history, or at least so much of it as related to my coming to this place:

I gave him a knife, which he was wonderfully delighted with; and I made him a belt, with a frog hanging to it, such as in England we wear hangers in;

and in the frog, instead of a hanger, I gave him a hatchet, which was not only as good a weapon in some cases, but much more useful upon other occasions.

I described to him the country of Europe, particularly England, which I came from; how we lived, how we worshipped God, how we behaved to one another, and how we traded in ships to all parts of the world.

I gave him an account of the wreck which I had been on board of, and showed him, as near as I could, the place where she lay; but she was all beaten in pieces before, and gone.
我又把我所乘的那条船出事的经过告诉他，并指给他看沉船的大致地方。至于那条船，早已给风浪打得粉碎，不知所踪了。
I showed him the ruins of our boat, which we lost when we escaped, and which I could not stir with my whole strength then; but was now fallen almost all to pieces.
我又把那只小艇的残骸指给他看，也就是我们逃命时翻掉的那只救生艇。我曾经竭尽全力想把它推到海里去，但怎么使劲小艇都分毫不动，现在也差不多烂成碎片了。
Upon seeing this boat, Friday stood, musing a great while, and said nothing. I asked him what it was he studied upon. At last says he, "Me see such boat like come to place at my nation."
星期五看到那只小艇，站在那里出神了好一会儿，一句话也不说。我问他在想些什么。他说，“我看到过这样的小船到过我们的地方。”
I did not understand him a good while; but at last, when I had examined further into it, I understood by him that a boat, such as that had been, came on shore upon the country where he lived: that is, as he explained it, was driven thither by stress of weather.
我好半天都不明白他的意思。最后，经过详细追问，我才明白他的意思：曾经有一只小艇，同这只一模一样，在他们住的地方靠岸，而且，据他说，小艇是给风浪冲过去的。
I presently imagined that some European ship must have been cast away upon their coast, and the boat might get loose and drive ashore;

but was so dull that I never once thought of men making their escape from a wreck thither, much less whence they might come: so I only inquired after a description of the boat.
当时，我的头脑真是迟钝极了，我怎么也没有想到有人也许从失事的船只上乘小艇逃生，到了他们那边。至于那是些什么人，我当然更是想都没有想过。因此，我只是要星期五把那只小艇的样子详细描绘一番。
Friday described the boat to me well enough; but brought me better to understand him when he added with some warmth, "We save the white mans from drown."
星期五把小艇的情况说得很清楚。后来，他又很起劲地补充说：“我们又从水里救出了一些白人。”我才进一步明白他的意思。
Then I presently asked if there were any white mans, as he called them, in the boat. "Yes," he said; "the boat full of white mans." I asked him how many.

He told upon his fingers seventeen. I asked him then what became of them. He told me, "They live, they dwell at my nation."
他掰着手指，说一共有十七个。我又问他们现在的下落。他回答说：“他们都活着，他们就住在我们的部落里。”
This put new thoughts into my head; for I presently imagined that these might be the men belonging to the ship that was cast away in the sight of my island, as I now called it;
他的话马上使我产生了新的联想。我想，那些白人一定是我上次在岛上看到出事的那条大船上的船员。
and who, after the ship was struck on the rock, and they saw her inevitably lost, had saved themselves in their boat, and were landed upon that wild shore among the savages.
他们在大船触礁后，知道船早晚会沉，就上小艇逃生了。他们到了野人聚居的蛮荒的海岸上了岸。
Upon this I inquired of him more critically what was become of them. He assured me they lived still there; that they had been there about four years; that the savages left them alone, and gave them victuals to live on.
因此，我更进一步仔细打听了那些白人的下落。星期五再三告诉我，他们现在仍住在那里，已经住了四年了。野人们不去打扰他们，还给他们粮食吃。
I asked him how it came to pass they did not kill them and eat them. He said, "No, they make brother with them;" that is, as I understood him, a truce;

and then he added, "They no eat mans but when make the war fight;" that is to say, they never eat any men but such as come to fight with them and are taken in battle.
接着，他又补充说：“他们只是打仗时吃人，平时是不吃人的。”这就是说，他们只吃战争中所抓到的俘虏，平时一般是不吃人的。
It was after this some considerable time, that being upon the top of the hill at the east side of the island, from whence, as I have said, I had, in a clear day, discovered the main or continent of America,
此后过了很久，有一天，天气晴朗，我和星期五偶然走上岛东边的那座小山顶。在那儿，也是在一个晴朗的日子里，我曾看到了美洲大陆。
Friday, the weather being very serene, looks very earnestly towards the mainland, and, in a kind of surprise, falls a jumping and dancing, and calls out to me, for I was at some distance from him.
当时，星期五全神贯注地朝大陆方向眺望了一会儿，忽然出乎意外地手舞足蹈，还把我叫了过去，因为我恰好不在他身边，离开他还有几步路。
I asked him what was the matter. "Oh, joy!" says he; "Oh, glad! there see my country, there my nation!"
我问他是怎么回事。他说：“噢，真高兴！好开心！我看到了我的家乡，我看到了自己的部落！”
I observed an extraordinary sense of pleasure appeared in his face, and his eyes sparkled, and his countenance discovered a strange eagerness, as if he had a mind to be in his own country again.
这时，我只见他脸上浮现出一种异常的欣喜。他双眼闪闪发光，流露出一种热切兴奋和神往的神色，仿佛想立刻回到故乡去似的。
