Mr. Collins was not left long to the silent contemplation of his successful love; for Mrs. Bennet, having dawdled about in the vestibule to watch for the end of the conference, no sooner saw Elizabeth open the door and with quick step pass her towards the staircase, than she entered the breakfast-room, and congratulated both him and herself in warm terms on the happy prospect of their nearer connection.
科林斯先生并没有多少时间对他刚才那番成功的求爱，来自个儿仔细地思量上一番；因为班纳特太太一直在走廊里踱来踱去，想知道他们谈话的结果，一看见伊丽莎白打开门，快步地从她身边朝楼梯那边走过去了，她便赶忙走进早餐间里，用热烈的言辞对他们不久就要到来的亲上加亲的喜事儿，为科林斯和她自己庆贺。
Mr. Collins received and returned these felicitations with equal pleasure, and then proceeded to relate the particulars of their interview, with the result of which he trusted he had every reason to be satisfied, since the refusal which his cousin had steadfastly given him would naturally flow from her bashful modesty and the genuine delicacy of her character.
科林斯先生高兴地接受了她的祝贺，又拿这些话儿向她道贺了一番，接着把他们这次谈话的细节叙述了一遍，说他完全有理由相信结果是令人满意的，因为他表妹的一再拒绝，于她那自愧不如的谦卑脾性和天生的羞怯性格是再自然不过了。
This information, however, startled Mrs. Bennet; she would have been glad to be equally satisfied that her daughter had meant to encourage him by protesting against his proposals, but she dared not believe it, and could not help saying so.
不过，这一席话却把班纳特太太惊了一跳。她当然也愿意同样高兴而又满意地认为，她女儿拒绝他的求婚是想要鼓励他，可是她不敢存有这种奢望，她情不自禁地这样说：
“But, depend upon it, Mr. Collins,” she added, “that Lizzy shall be brought to reason. I will speak to her about it directly. She is a very headstrong, foolish girl, and does not know her own interest but I will make her know it.”
“你可以相信我，科林斯先生，我会叫丽萃听话的。我这就去跟她谈这件事。她这孩子又蠢又执拗，她不知道她姓什么啦。我会让她明白过来的。”
“Pardon me for interrupting you, madam,” cried Mr. Collins; “but if she is really headstrong and foolish, I know not whether she would altogether be a very desirable wife to a man in my situation, who naturally looks for happiness in the marriage state.
“请原谅我打断你的话，夫人，”科林斯先生喊了起来，“如若她真是性情偏执，脑子也不开窍，我便担心，她能不能做我这样一个有些地位的人的理想妻子了，因为我结婚自然是为了寻求幸福的。
If therefore she actually persists in rejecting my suit, perhaps it were better not to force her into accepting me, because if liable to such defects of temper, she could not contribute much to my felicity.”
她要真是坚持拒绝我，那么不去勉强她接受或许更为妥当，因为假若她真有这样的性格缺陷，她对我以后的幸福就不会有多大的帮助了。”
“Sir, you quite misunderstand me,” said Mrs. Bennet, alarmed. “Lizzy is only headstrong in such matters as these. In everything else she is as good-natured a girl as ever lived. I will go directly to Mr. Bennet, and we shall very soon settle it with her, I am sure.”
“先生，你完全误解了我的意思啦，”班纳特太太略带着吃惊说，“丽萃只是在这种事情上执拗一些。在其他任何方面，她都是一个性情极好的姑娘。我这就去找班纳特先生，我确信，我们俩很快就能跟她把这件事定下来。”
She would not give him time to reply, but hurrying instantly to her husband, called out as she entered the library, “Oh! Mr. Bennet, you are wanted immediately; we are all in an uproar. You must come and make Lizzy marry Mr. Collins, for she vows she will not have him, and if you do not make haste he will change his mind and not have her.”
班纳特太太不等科林斯回答，就立即去找她丈夫了，一走进书房，她便大声喊道：“噢，我的班纳特先生，有件事马上需要你解决。我们已经是闹得不可开交了。你必须让丽萃嫁给科林斯先生，因为她发誓说她不嫁他，如果你不快一点儿，科林斯先生也将会改变主意，不要丽萃了。”
Mr. Bennet raised his eyes from his book as she entered, and fixed them on her face with a calm unconcern which was not in the least altered by her communication.
班纳特先生在她进来时从书本上抬起头来，安然而又毫无所动地注视着自己的妻子，他的神情丝毫也没有因为她的大喊大叫而有所改变。
“I have not the pleasure of understanding you,” said he, when she had finished her speech. “Of what are you talking?”
“我并没有理解了你的意思，”在她喊完之后，班纳特先生平静地说，“你究竟想要说什么呢？”
“Of Mr. Collins and Lizzy. Lizzy declares she will not have Mr. Collins, and Mr. Collins begins to say that he will not have Lizzy.”
“科林斯先生和丽萃的事情。丽萃说她不愿意嫁给科林斯先生，科林斯先生也开始说，他不愿意娶丽萃了。”
“And what am I to do on the occasion? It seems an hopeless business.”
“在这件事上，我能做些什么呢？这看起来似乎是件没什么希望的事情了。”
“Speak to Lizzy about it yourself. Tell her that you insist upon her marrying him.”
“你亲自去跟丽萃谈。告诉她，你非让她嫁给科林斯不可。”
“Let her be called down. She shall hear my opinion.”
“叫她下楼来。我将告诉她我的意见。”
Mrs. Bennet rang the bell, and Miss Elizabeth was summoned to the library.
班纳特太太去按了下铃，伊丽莎白很快被唤到了书房。
“Come here, child,” cried her father as she appeared. “I have sent for you on an affair of importance. I understand that Mr. Collins has made you an offer of marriage. Is it true?”
“过这儿来，孩子，”她进来后她的父亲大声说，“我叫你来，是因为一件重要的事情。我知道科林斯先生已经向你求过婚了，是吗？”
Elizabeth replied that it was.
伊丽莎白回答说“是的”。
“Very well--and this offer of marriage you have refused?”
“很好，而他的求婚已经被你拒绝了？”
“I have, sir.”
“是的，爸爸。”
“Very well. We now come to the point. Your mother insists upon your accepting it. Is it not so, Mrs. Bennet?”
“很好。现在我们就来谈正题。你母亲坚持要你接受这桩婚事，是这样吗，太太？”
“Yes, or I will never see her again.”
“是这样，否则的话，我就再也不愿意见到她了。”
“An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.”
“一种不愉快的抉择现在摆到了你面前，伊丽莎白。从今天起，你必定会与你父母中的一个成为陌路人。你母亲将再也不愿意看到你啦，如果你不嫁给科林斯先生的话；可是如果你要嫁给他，那我就再也不愿意见到你啦。”
Elizabeth could not but smile at such a conclusion of such a beginning, but Mrs. Bennet, who had persuaded herself that her husband regarded the affair as she wished, was excessively disappointed.
伊丽莎白对这件事竟会这样开始又会如此结束，不由得笑出声来，可是对于满以为已经说服丈夫同意了自己观点的班纳特太太来说，这可真是太令她失望了。
“What do you mean, Mr. Bennet, in talking this way? You promised me to insist upon her marrying him.”
“你讲这种话是什么意思，孩子他爸？你答应我要劝她嫁给科林斯先生的呀。”
“My dear,” replied her husband, “I have two small favours to request. First, that you will allow me the free use of my understanding on the present occasion; and secondly, of my room. I shall be glad to have the library to myself as soon as may be.”
“亲爱的，”班纳特先生回答说，“我有两件小事求你提供方便。第一，请允许我在这件事情上有权使用我自己的判断力；第二，让我能自由地使用我的书房。要是我的书房能尽快安静下来我会很高兴的。”
Not yet, however, in spite of her disappointment in her husband, did Mrs. Bennet give up the point.
班纳特太太尽管对她丈夫感到失望了，却并没有放弃她的主张。
She talked to Elizabeth again and again; coaxed and threatened her by turns.
她一遍又一遍地跟伊丽莎白谈话，软硬兼施，一会儿哄，一会儿骂。
She endeavoured to secure Jane in her interest; but Jane, with all possible mildness, declined interfering; and Elizabeth, sometimes with real earnestness, and sometimes with playful gaiety, replied to her attacks.
她竭力想让吉英为自己帮忙，吉英却总是好言回绝，不愿干预。而伊丽莎白时而一本正经，时而嬉皮笑脸地对付她母亲的进攻。
Though her manner varied, however, her determination never did.
她使用的方式虽有变化，她的决心却不会改变。
