The Professor stood still while everyone else hurried past him onto the train.
教授站着不动，其他人匆匆从他身边上了火车。
"Hachi. Sit,"he said.
“八公”。坐,”他说。
Hachi sat and Professor Ueno bent down and looked into his dark brown eyes.
八公坐着，上野教授弯下腰看着他深褐色的眼睛。
"What a good dog you are,"the Professor said once the station had quieted.
“你真是条好狗，”当车站安静下来后，教授说。
"What a fine dog you are,"he repeated softly.
“你真是条好狗，”他轻声重复道。
"Hachi, you are the best dog in all of Japan."
“八公，你是全日本最好的狗。”
He stroked Hachis head, kissed the tip of his nose, and straightened up."I will return at three o' clock."
他摸了摸他的头，吻了吻鼻尖，然后站直了身子。“我三点回来。”
The Professor stepped inside the train just before it pulled away and waved to Hachi. "Farewell, little friend."
教授走进火车，就在火车开走之前，他向八公挥手。“再见,小朋友。”
Hachi stayed right where he was on the platform, craning his neck to watch the departing train that held his master.
八公站在站台上，伸长脖子看着载着主人的火车开走。
When he could no longer see it, he sat a few minutes more, staring at the empty tracks.
当他再也看不见它的时候，他又坐了几分钟，盯着空荡荡的铁轨。
Mr. Yoshikawa came up behind him and scratched his ears.
吉川先生走到他身后，搔了搔他的耳朵。
"You are going to spend the day with me, Hachi," he said. "Come."
“八公，你今天要和我在一起，”他说。“来了。”
Mr. Yoshikawa took a few steps back toward his office.
吉川朝他的办公室走了几步。
But Hachi remained where he was, staring off in the direction the Professor's train had gone.
但是八公还是呆在原地，盯着教授的火车开走的方向。
Then he stood up, turned, and trotted toward the exit of the station.
然后他站起来，转过身，小跑着向车站的出口走去。
"Hachi,"Mr. Yoshikawa called, clapping his white gloves sharply."Come back."
“八公”。吉川喊道，一边使劲地拍着他的白手套。“回来了。”
Hachi ignored him and continued on his way.
八公不理他，继续赶路。
"Hachi!"the Station Master cried.
“八公”!”站长叫道。
He hurried after the dog, but when Hachi saw he was being chased, he dashed through the station, down the steps, and out onto the street.
他追赶狗，但当八公看到他被追赶，他冲过车站，下了台阶，来到街上。
Mr. Yoshikawa followed the dog down the stairs and tried to catch him, but he could not leave his post at the train station.
吉川先生跟着这只狗下了楼，想要抓住它，但是他在火车站里无法离开他的岗位。
In dismay he watched as the tip of Hachi's tail disappeared around a corner.
他沮丧地看着小八的尾巴尖在一个角落里消失了。
What was he going to tell the Professor when he returned on the three o' clock train?
