Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question that Sanjibganguli3084 posted on our YouTube channel.

你好! 本周《名师答疑》,我们回答桑吉巴格利3084在YouTube频道上发布的一个问题。

Ma,am, which of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

女士,请问下面哪句话的语法是正确的?

It was last Saturday that we met him

我们是在上星期六遇见他的。

It was last Saturday when we met him.

我们是在上星期六遇见他的。

Thank you for writing, Sanjib.

谢谢你的来信,桑吉布。

This is a very good question.

这是一个非常好的问题。

We talked about relative pronouns in an earlier Everyday Grammar article.

我们在早先的一篇《日常语法》文章中谈到了关系代词。

The article explains that relative pronouns help identify or give more information about a noun.

文章说,关系代词有助于指代或提供有关名词的更多信息。

English has many relative pronouns.

英语有很多关系代词。

Most relative pronouns are the same as question words: who, which, whose, whom, where, when, and why.

大多数关系代词与疑问词是一样的:谁,哪个,谁的,谁,在哪里,什么时候,为什么。

That is also a relative pronoun.

that也是关系代词。

Often, there is more than one grammatically acceptable relative pronoun.

通常,语法正确的关系代词不止一个。

For example, we can say: I have more friends who are boys. This is something which everyone knows.

例如,我们可以说:我有更多的男性朋友。这是大家都知道的事情。

Or I have more friends that are boys. This is something that everyone knows.

或者我有更多的男性朋友。这是大家都知道的事情。

All the sentences are grammatically correct.

这几个句子在语法上都是正确的。

Usually, choosing the best pronoun depends on the usage.

通常,最合适的代词要根据用法去选择。

In spoken English, we use “that” more often than other relative pronouns.

在英语口语中,that的使用频率比其他关系代词更高。

In academic written English, we use “which” more often than other relative pronouns.

在学术书面语中,which比其他关系代词用得更多。

In news writing, we use “which” and “who” the most.

在新闻写作中,用得最多的是which和who。

Sanjib, you asked about “that” or “when.”

桑吉布,你问的是用that还是when。

We do not use “when” as a relative pronoun very often.

我们不经常把when用作关系代词。

We sometimes use “when” with expressions of time.

我们有时用when来表示时间。

For example: There are a lot of times when we disagree.

例如:我们有很多次意见不一。

But more often, we do not use a relative pronoun.

但更多的时候,我们不用关系代词。

There are a lot of times we disagree.

我们有很多次意见不一。

So, either of your sentences is grammatically correct.

所以,你的两个句子在语法上都是正确的。

But most of the time in English, we would use “that” in your sentence, especially if it were spoken.

但在大多数情况下,在英语中,我们会在你的句子中使用that,特别是在口语中。

We hope this explanation has helped you, Sanjib.

希望这个解释对你有所帮助,桑吉布。

And that’s Ask a Teacher.

以上就是《名师答疑》。

I’m Gena Bennett.

我是吉娜·班尼特。
