Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question that was posted on our YouTube channel.
你好! 本周《名师答疑》,我们回答在本节目油管频道上发布的一个问题。
Question to English teachers: What is correct to say: different from or different than?
对英语老师的问题是:different后面的介词是用from还是than?
In the example below, which is correct?
在下面的例子中,哪个是正确的?
Cost of life has a different meaning than cost of living.
"生命的代价"与"生活的成本"意思不同。
Cost of life has a different meaning from cost of living.
"生命的代价"与"生活的成本"意思不同。
Thank you for this question.
谢谢你提出这个问题。
It is a good one!
这个问题很好!
Some people say that “different than” is incorrect.
有些人说different than是不正确的。
Your grammar textbook may say you should never use “different than.”
语法教材可能会说,绝对不要用different than。
However, in American English, we use both “different from” and “different than” to mean “not the same”.
然而,在美式英语中,different from和different than都用来表示“不一样”。
We use them before a noun phrase.
这两个词组用在名词短语之前。
For example: It’s different from other shows.
例如:这与其他节目不同。
State laws may be different from national laws.
州法律可能与国家法律不同。
Their ideas are a little different than ours.
他们的想法和我们的想法有点不同。
We can also use them before a clause.
我们也可以在从句前使用这两个词组。
For example: How are these different from the ones we had before?
例如:这些和我们以前有的那些有什么不同?
That is not any different than what I said.
这和我说的没有什么不同。
Dating is different than it was 10 years ago.
现在的约会与10年前的不同了。
Both phrases have the same meaning, but their usage is different.
这两个词组意思相同,但用法不同。
We use “different than” mostly in spoken English.
我们主要在口语中使用different than。
It is more informal, and it is almost always used before a clause.
这个词比较非正式,而且几乎总是用在从句之前。
We use “different from” mostly in written English, and we use it far more often than “different than.”
在书面语中主要使用different from,而且这个词组使用的频率远远高于different than。
So, either sentence is okay in spoken American English, but “different from” is the better choice because it comes before a noun phrase.
所以,在美式英语口语中,两个例句都可以,但different from更好,因为它出现在名词短语之前。
We hope this explanation has helped you.
希望这一解释对你有所帮助。
