Dear Claire,
'what' and 'if'’are two words as non-threatening as words can be. But put them together, side by side, and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life. "What if? I don't know how your story ended, but if what you felt then was true love then it's never too late. If it was true then, why wouldn't it be true now? You need only the courage to follow your heart. I don't know what a love like Juliet's feels like, a love to leave loved ones for, a love to cross oceans for, but I'd like to believe, if I ever were to feel it, that I'd have the courage to seize it. And, Claire, if you didn't, I hope one day that you will.

What 和 if 是两个什么样的词呢？as non-threatening as words can be，non-threatening, 不吓人的，不具威胁力的。这里可以理解为不会让人思绪波澜起伏的。As…as can be, 表示“最……”。也就是这两个词是再平常不过的两个词。但是，将他们放到一起，却能产生不可思议的能量，这个能量能够haunt you for the rest of your life. Haunt, 指“像鬼魂一样出没，徘徊”。如果我们说哪座房子闹鬼了，就可以说It is haunted.
What if, “假如”，虽然也表示假设，但是比单独使用的“if”感情色彩要强烈很多。是啊，假如，假如当初这封信没被发现，假如她当初勇敢的选择和心爱的人在一起，假如，她没有来找Lorenzo……，如果“假如”变成了行动，那么我们的生活也会随之改变。这就是信中所说的，what if的力量。
