Marathon vs. Run

We got user requests to do a show about "running" during the Shanghai Marathon in April: 4月上海马拉松时，就有用户留言希望我们做跟“跑步”相关的节目。

Sorry, we are running very late: 对不起，我们来晚了。

But this is an evergreen topic even if you don't run marathons or don't like running at all: 不过，这绝对是个常青主题，即使你不跑马拉松、对跑步丝毫不感兴趣。

"Marathon" and "run" are incredibly useful words: “马拉松”和“跑步”这两个词都非常实用。

马拉松：赛跑、开会、谈恋爱

Marathon: 马拉松

发音是/?mer?θɑ?n/，两个a的发音有所不同

Half marathon: 半马

Marathon这个词之所以有用，因为它常用来比喻各类漫长、耗时久的事：

最常用的表达是：Something is a marathon，而且经常与sprint短跑放在一起作对比

Life is not a sprint. It's a marathon: 人生不是一场短跑，而是一场马拉松。

Learning English is not a sprint. It's a marathon: 学英语不是一场短距离跑，而是一场马拉松。

Parenting is not a sprint. It's a marathon: 教育孩子不是一场短跑，而是一场马拉松。

除了上面的表达，marathon还可以组成很多单词短语

Movie marathon: 电影马拉松（一连贯播放或看主题或明星有关联的电影）

TV marathon: 电视马拉松（比如一口气刷一整套剧）

Study marathon: 常发生在考试前，密集学习备考

Gaming marathon: 长时间打游戏

Meeting marathon: 一连好几个会连在一起，背靠背，不是一个超长的会

怎么用在句子里？

I watched a Stephen Chow movie marathon last night: 我昨晚一连看了好几部周星驰的电影。

Exams are coming up. We need to have a study marathon: 马上要考试了，我们得赶紧加强学习。

My husband was up all night doing a gaming marathon: 我老公昨晚打了一个通宵的游戏。

I've got a meeting marathon today: 今天我一连要开好几个会。

上面的表达中英文都很对应，不过要形容恋爱长跑，却不是love marathon、dating marathon，而是

Long term relationship: 恋爱长跑

不过更口语的表达是：

They've been dating for a long time: 他们谈恋爱很久了。

They've been together forever: 他们在一起很久了。

跟marathon一样，run既能描述实际的跑步，也可以用来比喻

Run into: 遇到、碰到，最常搭配人或问题

I ran into my high school classmate yesterday: 我昨天遇到了高中同学。

We keep running into unexpected problems during the trip: 我们旅途中不断碰到意想不到的问题。

Run away from: 逃避，也常搭配人或问题

I ran into my ex at the party and immediately ran away: 我在派对上看到了前任，然后马上溜走了。

Running away from the situation will only make it worse: 逃避问题只会让情况更糟。

Run来表示运作、运行、管理

人+run

Run the show: 说了算、管理大小事务

My wife definitely runs the show in our family: 家里绝对是我太太说了算。

Run a business, company: 运作、经营一家公司

Doing an MBA is one thing. Running a real company is another: 读商学院和实际经营管理一家公司不是一回事儿。

Run the household/home: 持家

I never appreciated how hard it was to run a home until I started my own family: 自己成家后我才知道持家有多不容易。

Run it well: 以上所有的表达，都可以搭配run...well来形容管理得很好

Run it into the ground: 搞塌了

What a shame! He ran a 100-year-old business into the ground: 太可惜了，他把一家百年老店搞垮了。

机器+run

The aircon has been running non-stop! We're going to have a huge power bill: 空调一直开着！我们这个月电费要多少钱！

I left the machine running for a whole night. It's burning hot now: 我机器一晚没关，现在超级烫。

Run+时间

Running late: 晚了、迟了

Sorry, I'm runnning a few minutes late: 不好意思，我要晚到几分钟。

Running early: 早了

No rush. You're not late. I'm just running a bit early: 不急，你没晚，是我早到了。

Run+资源

Run low: 快用完了

Run out of: 用完了，也可以指快用完了

We're running low on milk. Can you bring some back? 我们牛奶快喝完了，你带一点回来吧？

I ran out of money when I was backpacking: 我背包客旅行时把钱都用光了。

What should we have for dinner? I'm running out of ideas: 我们晚饭吃什么？我快想不出来了。
