A temporary farewell to the Nanjing-Yangtze River Bridge, one of the region's most famous landmarks. The 48-year-old bridge will be closed for just two years for essential maintenance. During this period, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will have to find alternative ways to cross the river.
Completed in 1968, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was the country's first super-bridge to be fully designed and constructed by China. The double-decker crossing is about 15 meters wide and nearly seven kilometres long, and includes a railway.
But for the people of Nanjing, it's more than just a bridge or a landmark. Upon hearing it was suspending its service until 2019, many came out to say goodbye and witness the official closure.
