Tokyo Governor Yoichi Masuzoe has resigned over a financial scandal, in which he is alleged to have misused tax money, including spending on family trips and art work.
He is the second governor to quit since Tokyo won the rights to hold the 2020 Summer Olympics games.
However, Japanese officials insist his resignation will not delay preparations.
The 67-year-old politician won a 2014 election with the support of the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
