Raised in the Thumb of Michigan, the Harbor Beach native has spent the last decade dreaming of this day.

This was Derek before. His life forever changed in 2014 when he severely damaged his face after a suicide attempt with a gun.

When nothing worked, a face transplant was proposed, a rare and complex surgery done only about 50 times worldwide.

Dr. Samir Mardini at the Mayo Clinic took on the case, and in February of this year, a donor was found and the two-day surgery began.
