悬垂分词

Hi, Faith! Are you going rock climbing?

嗨,费思!你要去攀岩吗?

Yes, I'm going on a ropeless rock climbing trip. No safety equipment at all!

是的,我要进行一次无绳攀岩之旅。没有任何安全设备!

That sounds dangerous.

听起来很危险。

Not if I don't let go.

如果不危险我还不会做呢。

I guess. You know, there's an area of grammar that connects with rock climbing: dangling participles.

我想是的。你知道,有一个与攀岩有关的语法领域:悬垂分词。

Let's start with a different kind of example to explain.

我们从一个不同类型的例子开始解释。

"The barking dog woke up the whole neighborhood."

“那只吠叫的狗吵醒了整个街区的居民。”

Here, the participle "barking" acts like an adjective that describes the noun "dog."

在这里,分词“barking”就像形容词一样用来描述名词“dog”。

But imagine you heard the following sentence: Barking loudly, the whole neighborhood woke up.

但想象一下,你听到了下面这句话:狗大声吠叫,整个街区的居民都醒了。

This example is known as a dangling participle.

这个例子被称为悬垂分词。

The subject of the participle "barking loudly" is missing.

分词“barking loudly”的主语缺失。

The subject of this sentence is "the whole neighborhood."

这句话的主语是“the whole neighborhood”。

But it is not the whole neighborhood that is barking--such a situation would be truly bizarre!

但并不是整个街区的居民在吠叫——这样的情况会非常奇怪!

So, a dangling participle is a kind of verb that does not have a stated subject.

所以,悬垂分词是一种没有明确主语的动词。

The dangling participle has lost its point of connection with the sentence--just like a rock climber letting go of the rock!

悬垂分词失去了与句子的连接点——就像攀岩者放开石头一样!

Here is one way to correct the sentence: Barking loudly, the dog woke up the whole neighborhood.

下面是纠正这句话的一种方法:狗大声吠叫,吵醒了整个街区的居民。

Our rock climbing comparison can help you.

用攀岩作比喻可以帮助你更好地理解。

To succeed in a climb, the rock climber must stay close to the rock and keep points of connection.

要想攀岩成功,攀岩者必须紧贴岩石,保持连接点。

Participle phrases and other structures that act like adjectives are generally clearest when they stay close to the noun they are describing.

分词短语和其他类似形容词的结构通常在靠近它们所描述的名词时是最清楚的。
