Once upon a time, it was a rural sport in India.
But, due to the British conquering India and ruling over the country,
they trashed all the things which were existing in Indian culture.
But, it is being revived.
It is now known as the fastest growing sport in the world.
This great big story is inspired by Genesis.
Mallakhamb--it's made by two words, "malla" is a wrestler, "khamb" is a pole.
Basically, Mallakhamb is a wooden pole, which is about 8.5 feet in height.
The main motive was to wrestle against this pole in absence of your partner.
You can find traces about Mallakhamb in our old epics,
but the historical evidence shows Mallakhamb going back over 200 years.
My name is Uday Deshpande, and I teach Mallakhamb in this institution every day.
I come here at 4:30 in the morning, and I'm here until 10:30 in the night.
Basically, all the movements are divided into five categories.
The first one is mounts.
So, from the floor, you mount on the apparatus.
Then, there is hold parts.
You have steady positions on the pole like yoga postures.
Then, there are some catches.
You release the apparatus and before falling on the ground you re-grasp it again.
And then the acrobotic movements--very fast turning, twisting, rotating movements.
And the last is dismounts, maybe with the somersaults, simple dismount.
All the positions are basically named like Potaz Atazwa.
Khandi.
Bani Guruji Pakar.
Bajong Pakar.
Mohang Biri.
All these are the original names which were given by the ancestors to these typical movements,
and we continue with the same nomenclature today.
We start at the age of 5. So, so young.
And of course there is no higher age limit, so anybody of any age can learn this.
People always like the easiest things to learn, like cricket or like football.
Here, when you want to learn Mallakhamb, it needs some effort to do that.
So, it's not so easy.
But, the courage and confidence is developed.
It overall changes the total personality of the person who starts doing Mallakhamb.
It deserves much more status than what it has today.
But, Mallakhamb is now getting spread, and more and more people have started taking interest in the sport.
Our next target is to revive these places and spread the Mallakhamb.
