Hey, what's up guys? I'm Alex Farnham. And this is 'Animalist News.'
Now, I don't know about you guys, but I loved trick or treating as a kid.
Roaming the neighborhood, eating candy TP-ing houses, you know, ding dong ditching. Running from polar bears.
Wait! What?
等等!什么!
Running from polar bears?
Yes. That's actually a problem a small town is facing in Canada this Halloween due to polar bear season.
Arviat, a small community made up of 2,300 people, is canceling outdoor Halloween this year for the first time ever.
Instead the kids will spend Halloween face-painting, eating candy, and going through a haunted house, all in the safe confines of the town's community hall.
1,200 kids all packed into a building hamper from candy — now that's a haunted house all on its own. Am I right?
So what is polar bear season exactly?
Well, it's basically the time of year around October and November where polar bear sightings become very common in or around the town.
Although no one has been attacked other than a sled dog last September, it's still very dangerous.
And even more dangerous for the polar bears, since on average 500 a year are killed in Canada, according to the World Conservation Union.
The reason why these bears are approaching populated areas is because of global warming, since the shore ice has been melting so much along the Western Hudson Bay.
Now according to the Canadian Wildlife Services, that bay is where an estimated 900 to 1,000 bears live.
It's been rapidly melting-- over three times the global rate since the 1990s.
So now all these bears are being forced to move closer to people's homes and migrate through the town, in order to find food.
Locals are afraid of them probably because they're hungry.
Oh, and they are bears.
Citizens have put up electric fences and hired a bear monitor to chase bears away, which has been an improvement.
But it still hasn't completely solved this issue.
The only real solution is to counteract climate change.
The U.S. Geological Survey projects 2/3 of polar bears will be gone by 2050.
But if we can lower the levels of carbon dioxide pollution, it will help keep the temperatures down in the Arctic and the bears away from harm.
