This is a really important question, so thank you for it, Dottie.
It's been no secret that in recent years, koalas have faced a huge problem from wildfires and habitat loss.
But there are huge conservation efforts now taking place in Australia to build up their habitats once again to put in better fire protection for areas, and on top of that, also to build widlife corridors.
So that their populations can continue to move around and hopefully grow.
The way that we can tell if a species has gone extinct is effectively through the monitoring that's done by different conservation organizations and zoos that are working within those areas.

So we'll look for signs that that species has been in the area, we'll also obviously use camera traps and photos to actually monitor what individuals of those species have been seen.
So we can then tell how many males and how many females are within that area.
And obviously, we keep our fingers crossed that we might even spot some offspring at some point.
But obviously, if there's no evidence of any of that, no droppings, no kind of paw prints, then obviously they can be signs that species has potentially gone extinct in that area.
But with all the amazing work that's being done in Australia, hopefully koala's are going to be around long into the future.
