第二十五课 他不曾再笑
The bark that held a prince went down,
树枝阻挡住王子的掉落,
The sweeping waves rolled on;
翻腾的海面滚滚向前;
And what was England's glorious crown
什么是英格兰光荣的皇冠
To him that wept a son?
让他痛失一个儿子?
He lived—for life may long be borne
他还活着——余生可能要长期承受
Ere sorrow break its chain;
悲伤打破了他的枷锁;
Why comes not death to those who mourn? —
为什么死亡不降临到这些悲痛的人身上?——
He never smiled again!
他不曾再笑!
There stood proud forms around his throne,
以骄傲的姿态站在他的王座上
The stately and the brave;
庄严而勇敢;
But which could fill the place of one, —
但是我怎样才能填满这个地方,——
That one beneath the wave?
波浪以下的那个地方?
Before him passed the young and fair,
年轻又正直之人从他面前经过,
In pleasure's reckless train;
快乐而不计后果的随从们;
But seas dashed o'er his son's bright hair: —

He sat where festal bowls went round,

He heard the minstrel sing;
他听到吟游诗人在歌唱;
He saw the tourney's victor crowned

Amidst the knightly ring:
环绕在骑士的光环之中:
A murmur of the restless deep
焦躁不安的低语
Was blent with every strain,
与每个人混合在一起,
A voice of winds that would not sleep: —
风的声音不会休眠:——
He never smiled again!

Hearts, in that time, closed o'er the trace

Of vows once fondly poured;

And strangers took the kinsman's place

At many a joyous board;
