The Financial Times secured the UK’s top journalism prize on Tuesday night, winning the coveted newspaper of the year trophy at the annual Society of Editors National British Press Awards.

The recognition, the first time the FT has won the newspaper title since 2008, was one of four secured by the organisation with Matthew Garrahan, global media editor, winning in the business and finance category; Pilita Clark taking her third straight prize in environmental journalism; and FT journalists in Europe winning news team of the year for their series on the Europopulists.

Tom Burgis also was highly commended in the business journalist of the year category as was David Crow in science reporting.

“2017 was another banner year for the Financial Times,” the judges wrote. “It passed the milestone of 900,000 paying readers and invested time, money and manpower in quality journalism.”

FT editor Lionel Barber, who accepted the award at the gala dinner in central London accompanied by deputy editor Roula Khalaf and news editor Peter Spiegel, thanked the hundreds of journalists who work for the news organisation, calling the award “a tribute to quality journalism”.

The four awards on Tuesday come a year after the FT secured five prizes, including news website of the year, at the 2017 ceremony.

The Sunday Times won five awards, including scoop of the year, for revelations that the police had found porn on the parliamentary computer of the UK’s first secretary of state, Damian Green, a scandal that ultimately led to him being fired from the cabinet. The Times took five, including two for Hugo Rifkind, winner of critic of the year and the best of humour award.

Mr Garrahan’s award-winning work included one of the most important stories published during last year’s unfolding Harvey Weinstein scandal, which detailed how the disgraced Hollywood mogul silenced victims of alleged sexual assault through the use of non-disclosure agreements.
