Western food ban in Russia leaves bad aftertaste
Among the cafes and restaurants of central Moscow, "Les Enfants du Paradis" stands out. It's popular with the city's music and art crowd, who come for the eclectic European food. Pizza, of course, but cutlets and prosciutto too. But all that variety is about to go away. That's because Russia placed a one-year ban on all meat, fish, dairy, fruits and vegetables, from the U.S. and much of Europe. Retaliation, for Western sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine. But owner Alexi Paperny thinks it's the Russian consumer who will pay ultimately pay.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) "DETI RAIKA" RESTAURANT OWNER ALEXEI PAPERNY, SAYING: "My congratulations to everyone. Now we have to buy food products at higher prices, to sell them at higher prices. People don't have money to buy it. I don't know. We will try to do our best to survive. We've been through bad times before."
The ban impacts well over $9 billion in imports. Producing countries could feel the pinch. Russia is by far the biggest consumer of E.U. fruits and vegetables. The second biggest buyer of U.S. poultry. And a major global consumer of fish. Still,as economic policy, the ban doesn't make sense to this restauranteur.

Russians have relished imported foods since the fall of the Soviet Union. But with inflation already rising, and the Russian ruble falling, the ban could leave a sour aftertaste for these diners.
Japan commemorates 69 years since Nagasaki atomic bomb
The images are iconic... a mushroom cloud erupts over the city of Nagasaki in 1945, in the world's second wartime atomic bombing ever. Some 150,000 people died in the attack and from the subsequent radiation sickness. 69 years later, Japan remembers the victims during a memorial service. Visitors observed a moment of silence at 11:02 in the morning, the exact time the bomb was dropped. After their surrender to Allied forces, Japan adopted a pacifist constitution. Recently though Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lifted the country's ban on aiding other countries under attack.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SAMANTHA POWER, UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR, SAYING: "... given that Ukraine has allowed international humanitarian groups to deliver aid within its territory, there is no logical reason why Russia should seek to deliver it.Therefore, any further unilateral intervention by Russia into Ukrainian territory, including one under the guise of providing humanitarian aid, would be completely unacceptable and deeply alarming.
NATO says Russia might be preparing for an invasion with some 20,000 troops they've stationed along the Ukraine border.Moscow denies the allegations. Along with humanitarian aid, western countries have been supplying the Ukrainian armed forces with military equipment. A Canadian cargo plane loaded with helmets, protective vests and first aid kits landed in Kiev on Friday. Government forces say they are gradually tightening the noose around the heavily armed pro-Russian separatists. The United Nations says more than 1,100 people including government forces, rebels and civilians have been killed in the conflict so far.
