South Korea ferry crew go on trial
The crew and captain of a South Korean ferry that sank in April are led into court. They're on trial for charges, ranging from negligence to homicide after nearly 300 people -- mostly children -- died. Angry and grieving relatives of the dead packed the courtroom, as they listened to proceedings. One relative held up a sign that read: "You are not human. You are beneath animals."
A scuffle later broke out between the relatives and court security guards who tried to take the sign away. Most of the victims, who were from the same school on a field trip stayed in their cabins as instructed. In contrast surviving crew members, including the captain captured here on video, abandoned the Sewol, leaving hundreds of passengers trapped inside. The South Korean President said a nationwide manhunt is also under way for the businessman, who is believed to own the company that ran the sunken ferry.
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT PARK GEUN-HYE SAYING: "Prosecutors and police have been making efforts to capture Yoo Byung-Un, but it does not make any sense that they haven't caught him yet. They need to recheck arresting methods and explore every possible means to bring Yoo to justice."
The captain and three senior crew members, who are charged with homicide face a maximum sentence of death. The remaining crew members face lesser charges. These 15 men have been in detention since their indictments. But as the court is in Gwangju, the closest city to scene of the disaster where emotions are still running high, many say these men appear to have already been tried and convicted by an angry public even before the trial began.
Karachi airport reopens after raid
Soldiers and tanks leave this Karachi airport after an all night gun battle. At least 27 people were killed -- including the attackers -- in the assault on Jinnah International Airport. Security forces regained control of the airport in the early hours of Monday after ten heavily armed gun men shot their way in the night before. The Pakistani Taliban said it carried out the raid in revenge for the killing of its leader last year. Bystanders cheer as the troops pass by making victory signs. But this is no victory for Pakistan. The latest fighting all but destroys peace talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban. It also raises questions among the public about security.
(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) EMPLOYEE OF PRIVATE FIRM, CHANVEZ ABBASI, SAYING: "Those terrorists brazenly stormed into the airport. How? And did you see the amount of arms and ammunition they carried with them? How did they get all that inside? An ordinary citizen cannot even enter the airport with a bunch of keys."
Now it's business as usual. Passengers return to the airport as flights resume.
(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu/English) PASSENGER ARRIVING TO CATCH FLIGHT, MRS. HISHAM, SAYING: "This is a message from them (the Taliban) that nothing is impossible for them. So we have to return the message the same way, that nothing is impossible for us as well. This is our country. This country belongs to us, and we have to defend it."
As ambulances carrying the dead leave the airport, the attack is a reminder that despite divisions, the Taliban is still able to mount crippling strikes across Pakistan.
California man pleads not guilty in decade long kidnapping case
A California man accused of abducting a 15-year-old girl and holding her captive for a decade entered a plea of not guilty Monday (June 09) on charges of rape and kidnapping. Police say the woman, now 25, told detectives she endured a decade of physical and sexual abuse after being abducted by her mother's live-in boyfriend, Isidro Garcia, from the family's suburban Santa Ana home in 2004. The woman, who has not been publicly identified, was forced into marriage in 2007 and later bore his child, a daughter, in 2012, police said. His attorney Charles Frisco Jr has cast doubt on the woman's story.
SOUNDBITE: Charles Frisco Jr. saying (English): "Why is it that one person hasn't come forward to corroborate her story? Not one person. If she was physically, sexually, mentally abused, somebody, somehow, some way would have seen this." Garcia remains in custody on $1 million dollars bail.
