Pakistani authorities say Islamists armed with rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapons were behind the assault. Nine militants and a soldier died during the gun battle which raged for several hours. Residents living nearby said they heard the fighting in the early hours of the morning. COLLEGE STUDENT MOHAMMAD KHAWAR: "At around 2 or 2.15am we heard a lot of firing which was followed by loud explosions. This went on until around 4 in the morning." 2【Man accused of waterboarding daughter】男子因对女儿水刑遭控告
TEXT:Pediatrician Melvin Morse, known for research into near-death experiences, is now being accused of waterboarding his 11-year-old daughter. "How you would be if you were being dragged through the mud, you have had a good reputation as a fine physician" The 58-year-old doctor along with his wife Pauline were arrested on charges of conspiracy and endangering the welfare of a child. Morse's attorney Joe Hurley responded to accusations his client waterboarded his daughter four times over a two year period. Morse's attorney Joe Hurley saying: "I have no idea what happened, I have never asked him. Absolutely not. And I explained to him as I explained to you because most people say 'what did he say,' I don't want to know his truth until I hear what their version is" He also acknowledged the highly charged nature of the accusations. Melvin Morse's attorney Joe Hurley saying: "So waterboarding has a distinct emotional pull immediately when you hear it. It makes you think of bad, bad, bad people, and that attaches to you to some degree." Morse and his wife were released on bail and will be arraigned in the next few weeks.

3【Students, police clash in Chile】智利警方与学生发生冲突
TEXT:Violent clashes on the streets of Santiago, Chile. The fighting began after a group of students occupied a local high school building to demand educational reform. Police respond with tear gas and water cannon -- the students in turn hurl rocks and other projectiles. More than two dozen schools have been taken over by students -- all part of their call for a government overhaul of an education system they describe as low quality and profit-driven. Student organisations have called for a nationwide strike, as well as various marches. Last year, hundreds of high schools and universities were occupied for months, but sit-ins have become less frequent this year. The government says the protests forced nearly 38 percent of students to repeat the school year.

4【2.5 million Syrians in need of help says U.N aid chief】联合国援助首席称250万叙利亚人需要帮助
TEXT:The humanitarian situation in Syria is worsening, says U.N aid chief Valerie Amos, with an estimated 2.5 million Syrians in need of help. Amos said the number of those in crisis has more than doubled in the past five months. UN HUMANITARIAN RELIEF COORDINATOR, VALERIE AMOS, SAYING: "The humanitarian situation has worsened since I was here in March. Over a million people have been uprooted and face destitution. Perhaps a million more have urgent humanitarian needs due to the widening impact of the crisis on the economy and on people's livelihoods." Some fear the conflict is spilling across the region, after a mass kidnapping of Syrian refugees in Lebanon on Wednesday. Seen here, Lebanese Shi'ite gunmen kidnapped more than 20 people in retaliation for the capture of one of their kinsmen in Syria, prompting Sunni Gulf states to warn their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately. But Mahmod, one Syrian refugee in Turkey, says he thinks the Syrian government is behind the kidnappings, as their hold on power at home loosens. The Syrian conflict has escalated sectarian tensions in Lebanon, with its Sunnis mainly supporting Syria's rebels, while Shi'ites, including the powerful militant group Hezbollah, mainly backing president Bashar al-Assad.
