Albert: Do people in ancient China also enjoy drama?
Li: Definitely. And there was a flourish of plays in the Yuan Dynasty, which was the 13th~14th century.
Albert: Could you name some?
Li: Like Romance of the Western Bower,The Peony Pavilion, and The Peach Blossom Fan. All are pre-eminent plays as well as jewels in Chinese literature.
Li: The two are different in many aspects. For example, in the Chinese theatre, most words are sung to a certain set of tunes—which are called "qu pai".
Albert: What about the characters? Any difference?
Li: The characters could be roughly put into four categories, Sheng, Dan, Jing, Chou—male roles, female roles, painted roles and clowns respectively.
Albert: Sounds fascinating.
