In other news Typhoon Meranti has passed through Xiamen in southeast China's Fujian province leaving behind a trail of devastation. Hundreds of trees have been uprooted, blocking roads, and a number of houses have been destroyed. All scenic areas in the city have been closed and ferry services to Gulangyu Island have been suspended for tourists and are only available to local residents.
Local authorities estimate direct economic losses at around 17 billion yuan - or 2 point 6 billion US dollars - and say the tourist industry in the city will need at least three months to recover. However, as clean-up operations from Meranti continue, another tropical storm is set to batter the region. The National Environmental Forecasting Center says Typhonn Malakas has entered the southern part of the East China Sea and has issued an orange alert for waves and storms for Taiwan and the eastern coast of the Chinese mainland.
