Today marks the 57th anniversary of the end of serfdom in Tibet. Various activities are being held in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, and all across the autonomous region to celebrate the historic democratic reform.
Chairman of the autonomous region, Losang Jamcan, has delivered a televised speech. He said Tibet has witnessed encouragingly fast economic growth and better-than-ever standards of living in recent years. By 2015, the region’s GDP exceeded 100 billion yuan, an increase of 11 percent. Tibet has seen double-digit growth for 23 consecutive years. The per capita disposable income of rural residents is just over 8,200 yuan.
Losang Jamcan also said the 14th Dalai Lama has never stopped trying to split the country by encouraging Tibet to go independent. He said that is against the tide of history, and is doomed to fail.
