Chinese EV giant BYD has unveiled a groundbreaking electric vehicle charging system that delivers speeds rivaling the time it takes to refuel a traditional gas-powerered car.

Chairman Wang Chuanfu announced that the system tested on the new Han L sedan can provide 470 kilometres of range in just 5 minutes.

The first models featuring this technology, the Han L and the Tang L SUV, will launch in April, starting at 270,000 yuan and 280,000 yuan respectively.

The new charging platform positions BYD ahead of Tesla's Superchargers, which provide 275 kilometres in 15 minutes, and Mercedes-Benz's latest EV, which achieves 325 kilometres in 10 minutes.
