Social media is a big part of lots of young people's lives, but how old should you be to use it, and who should decide: children, companies, parents, or the government?

In the UK, there's no laws about how old you have to be to use social media.

But most of the apps say you have to be 13 or older to use them.

However, research has shown that lots of children younger than that use social media anyway and have their own profiles.

That's got governments worried about what kids might be seeing, who they're talking to, and how to protect them from harm by content that isn't appropriate.

New UK rules want the social media companies to do more to protect young users and stop them seeing what they shouldn't.

In India, you have to be 14 to use social media, and France has just approved a law which would mean kids under 15 have to get parent or guardian permission.

In Australia, the Prime Minister wants to introduce a new law for a minimum age of between 14 and 16 for all social media platforms. Companies that let younger users use their apps could be punished.
