The story of the International African American Museum is a good 20 plus years old.

You know, our former mayor of Charleston read a book that changed his perspective on the relationship between the African-American community in heritage and enslavement.

Then the circle got even wider and folks decided that this period of slavery is neither the beginning nor the end of the African-American journey.

The South, these are our roots, not just the roots of black folks. The south is the root of the nation and it's our foundation, and it's really important to understand that foundation.

It's not that we are uncovering things that we didn't already know, because these stories have been kept in whispers.

What is really interesting is that pro or con, everyone is talking about these stories right now.

That's when monuments are made. That's when museums come forward.

We have to build these places where we can tell the story, save the story, steward the story.

But one of the challenges has been the curation of the story: who's picking the stories, who's telling the stories, what stories do we believe should have grand institutions.

And arguably, the African-American story has not been in the category. That was thought to need a grand institution.

And while arguably, every American history museum should be talking about African-American history as this is a part of American history.

There is also room to have entire spaces dedicated to the story, so we can get into the nuances, so we can talk about it from different perspectives.
