I was ready to burst with holding my breath, when, as I felt myself rising up, so, to my immediate relief,[qh]

I found my head and hands shoot out above the surface of the water;[qh]

and though it was not two seconds of time that I could keep myself so,[qh]

yet it relieved me greatly, gave me breath, and new courage.[qh]

I was covered again with water a good while, but not so long but I held it out;[qh]

and finding the water had spent itself, and began to return,[qh]

I struck forward against the return of the waves, and felt ground again with my feet.[qh]

I stood still a few moments to recover breath,[qh]

and till the waters went from me, and then took to my heels and ran with what strength I had further towards the shore.[qh]

But neither would this deliver me from the fury of the sea, which came pouring in after me again;[qh]

and twice more I was lifted up by the waves and carried forward as before, the shore being very flat.[qh]

The last time of these two had well-nigh been fatal to me,[qh]
这两次大浪的冲击，后一次几乎要了我的命，[qh]
for the sea having hurried me along as before, landed me, or rather dashed me, against a piece of rock, and that with such force,[qh]
因为海浪把我向前推时，把我冲撞到一块岩石上，[qh]
that it left me senseless, and indeed helpless, as to my own deliverance;[qh]
使我立即失去了知觉，动弹不得。[qh]
for the blow taking my side and breast, beat the breath as it were quite out of my body;[qh]
原来这一撞，正好撞在我胸口上，使我几乎透不过起来。[qh]
and had it returned again immediately, I must have been strangled in the water;[qh]
假如此时再来一个浪头，我必定憋死在水里了。[qh]
but I recovered a little before the return of the waves, and seeing I should be covered again with the water,[qh]
好在第二个浪头打来之前我已苏醒，看到情势危急，自己必为海水吞没，[qh]
I resolved to hold fast by a piece of the rock, and so to hold my breath, if possible, till the wave went back.[qh]
就决心紧抱岩石，等海水一退，[qh]
Now, as the waves were not so high as at first, being nearer land, I held my hold till the wave abated,[qh]
又往前狂奔一阵，跑近了海岸。[qh]
and then fetched another run, which brought me so near the shore that the next wave, though it went over me,[qh]
后一个浪头赶来时，只从我头上盖了过去，[qh]
yet did not so swallow me up as to carry me away;[qh]
已无力把我吞没或卷走了。[qh]
and the next run I took, I got to the mainland,[qh]
我又继续向前跑，终于跑到岸边，[qh]
where, to my great comfort, I clambered up the cliffs of the shore and sat me down upon the grass,[qh]
攀上岸上的岩石，在草地上坐了下来。[qh]
free from danger and quite out of the reach of the water.[qh]
这时，我总算脱离了危险，海浪已不可能再袭击我了，心里感到无限的宽慰。[qh]
