The Ass's Brains
驴子的脑袋
The Lion and the Fox went hunting together.
狮子和狐狸一起去打猎。
The Lion, on the advice of the Fox, sent a message to the Ass, proposing to make an alliance between their two families.
狮子听从了狐狸的建议，给驴子捎了个信，提议两家联手。
The Ass came to the place of meeting, overjoyed at the prospect of a royal alliance.
驴子以为狮子真要和它联手，欣喜若狂。它来到了约定的地点。
But when he came there the Lion simply pounced on the Ass, and said to the Fox: "Here is our dinner for today.
但他刚到那里，狮子就猛扑向驴子，并对狐狸说：“这是我们今天的晚餐了。
Watch you here while I go and have a nap.
我去睡个午觉，你在这儿看着点。
Woe betide you if you touch my prey."
如果你碰了我的猎物，你就完了。”
The Lion went away and the Fox waited; but finding that his master did not return, ventured to take out the brains of the Ass and ate them up.
狮子走开了，狐狸等着他。但是他发现大王很久没有回来，于是就冒险把驴的脑子取出来吃了。
When the Lion came back he soon noticed the absence of the brains, and asked the Fox in a terrible voice: "What have you done with the brains?"
狮子回来之后，很快就发现驴的脑子不见了，于是愤怒地审问狐狸：“你把脑子弄到哪里去了？”
"Brains, your Majesty! it had none, or it would never have fallen into your trap."
“脑子？陛下！”它没有脑子，否则怎么会落入您的圈套。”
Wit has always an answer ready.
巧舌如簧也是一种智慧。
