Dorothy listened to this speech with wonder.
多萝茜听得一头雾水。
What could the little woman possibly mean by calling her a sorceress, and saying she had killed the Wicked Witch of the East?
这个小老妇人怎么称呼她做“女术士”，并且口口声声地说她杀死了那东方的坏女巫，这究竟是什么意思？
Dorothy was an innocent, harmless little girl, who had been carried by a cyclone many miles for home; and she had never killed anything in all her life.
多萝茜只是一个天真无邪的小女孩儿，被旋风带到这里，她从未杀死过什么人。
But the little woman evidently expected her to answer; so Dorothy said, with hesitation, "You are very kind, but there must be some mistake. I have not killed anything."
然而很明显那小老妇人正热切地等待着她的回答；所以多萝茜只有所顾虑地说：“您很好，但是你们一定弄错了，我并没有杀人。”
"Your house did it anyway," replied the little old woman, with a laugh, "and that is the same thing. See!" she continued, pointed to the corner of the house.
“但是你的屋子确实这样做了，”小老妇人笑着回答说；“你瞧！确实如此。” 她继续说下去，指着屋子的角落里。
"There are her two feet, still sticking out from under a block of wood."
“女巫的两只脚仍旧露在木板底下呢。”
Dorothy looked, and gave a little cry of fright.
多萝茜朝她指点的地方看去，吓得她叫了一声。
There, indeed, just under the corner of the great beam the house rested on, two feet were sticking out, shod in silver shoes with pointed toes.
在屋子架着大横梁的角落下面，伸出了两只脚，套着一双尖头的银鞋子。
"Oh, dear! Oh, dear!" cried Dorothy, clasping her hands together in dismay.
“啊！啊！”多萝茜叫着，惊慌地握着双手。
"The house must have fallen on her. Whatever shall we do!"
“她肯定是被屋子压着了。我们要做点什么呢？”
"There is nothing to be done" Said the little woman calmly.
“什么都不用做，”小老妇人平静地说。
"But who was she? "asked Dorothy.
“可是她是谁呢？”多萝茜问。
"She was the Wicked Witch of the East, as I said," answered the little woman.
“她就是我刚才说的东方坏女巫。”小老妇人回答。
"She has held all the Munchkins in bondage for many years, making them slave for her night and day. Now they are all set free, and are grateful to you for the favor."
“她许多年前就奴役了所有的芒奇金人，让他们整日整夜地做作苦役。现在，他们完全自由了，因此要感谢您的恩惠。”
"Who are the Munchkins?" inquired Dorothy.
“芒奇金人？” 多萝茜疑惑地问。
"They are the people who live in this land of the East where the Wicked Witch ruled."
“他们是住在这个东方国土的人民，东方国土是被坏女巫控制着的。”
"Are you a Munchkin?" asked Dorothy.
多萝茜问：“你也是芒奇金人吗？”
"No, but I am their friend, although I live in the land of the North. When they saw the Witch of the East was dead the Munchkins sent a swift messenger to me, and I came at once. I am the Witch of the North."
“不；我住在北方的国土，但是我是他们的朋友。当这些芒奇金人看到这个东方的女巫死了，他们派一个跑得最快的信使，告诉我这个消息，我立刻就来了。我是北方女巫。”
"Oh, gracious!" cried Dorothy. "Are you a real witch?"
“噢，天啊！” 多萝茜喊道，“你真是一个女巫吗？”
"Yes, indeed," answered the little woman.
“对，真的；”小老妇人回答说。
"But I am a good witch, and the people love me. I am not as powerful as the Wicked Witch was who ruled here, or I should have set the people free myself."
“但我是个好女巫，大家都喜欢我。我没有坏女巫强大。否则我早就把她杀了，亲自解放这里的人们。”
"But I thought all Witches were wicked," said the girl, who was half frightened at facing a real witch."
“可是我原以为女巫都是很坏的，”多萝茜说并且有点恐慌地看着眼前的女巫。
"Oh, no, that is a great mistake. There were only four witches in all the Land of Oz, and two of them, those who live in the North and the South, are good witches.
“啊，不是这样；你错啦。在整个奥芝地区，一共有四个女巫。其余两住在北方和南方的，都是好女巫。
I know this is true, for I am one of them myself, and cannot be mistaken.
千真万确，因为我自己就是其中的一个，不可能弄错的。
Those who dwelt in the East and the West were, indeed, wicked witches; but now that you have killed one of them, there is but one Wicked Witch in all the Land of Oz--the one who lives in the West."
那两个住在东方和西方的，确实是坏女巫；现在，你已经把她们中的一个杀死了。在全奥芝，就只剩下西方的坏女巫了。”
