All the fairies' gifts were in the meantime fulfilled;

for the princess was so beautiful, and well-behaved and amiable, and wise, that every one who knew her loved her.

Now it happened that on the very day she was fifteen years old the king and queen were not at home,

So she roamed about by herself, and looked at all the rooms and chambers,

till at last she came to an old tower, to which there was a narrow staircase ending with a little door.

In the door there was a golden key, and when she turned it the door sprang open,
门上插着一把金钥匙。当她转动金钥匙时，门就开了，
and there sat an old lady spinning away very busily.
一个老太婆坐在里面在忙着纺纱。
"Why, how now, good mother," said the princess, "what are you doing there?"
公主见了说道：“喂!老妈妈，您好!您这是在干什么呀?”
"Spinning," said the old lady, and nodded her head.
“纺纱。”老太婆回答说，接着又点了点头。
"How prettily that little thing turns round!" said the princess, and took the spindle and began to spin.
“这小东西转起来真有意思!”说着，并拿起纺锤纺纱，
But scarcely had she touched it before the prophecy was fulfilled, and she fell down lifeless on the ground.
但她刚一碰到它，咒语就应验了，她立即倒在地上失去了知觉。
