Rebecca Bloomwood is a shopaholic. She is addicted to shopping though she’s in debt. She works as a journalist in New York and dreams of joining the fashion magazine Alette.
Rebecca Bloomwood
When Rebecca arrives at the interview, she's told that the position has been filled internally.
However, the receptionist tells her there is an open position with the magazine Successful Saving, explaining that getting a job at Successful Saving could eventually lead to a position at Alette magazine.
Rebecca becomes so popular that she is invited to attend a TV interview. During the interview, her debt collector Derek Smeath is in the audience and confronts Rebecca.
So why Rebecca, like many other girls in the world, shops so often?
What she says in the movie about shopping resonates with many women.
A man will never love you or treat you as well as a store.
If a man doesn’t fit, you can’t exchange him seven days later for a gorgeous cashmere sweater. And a store always smells good. A store can awaken a lust for things you never even knew you needed.
I love new clothes. If everyone could just wear new clothes everyday, I reckon depression wouldn’t exist anymore.
That moment. That instant when your fingers curl round the handles of a shiny, uncreased bag—and all the gorgeous new things inside it become yours.
What’s it like? It’s like going hungry for days, then cramming your mouth full of warm buttered toast.
There is no evidence to suggest that women shop more than men. It’s only that women enjoy shopping more than men do.
In 2013, a study of 2,000 shoppers in the UK found that men got bored of shopping within 26 minutes, while women did not show any signs of fatigue for two hours.
One theory says that hundreds of thousands of years of conditioning makes men and women behave like this.
When our ancestors lived in caves, the males went out to hunt animals while females gathered food such as fruits and veggies from the forests.
For the male hunters, it was necessary to make the kill quickly and get back to the safety of the settlement as fast as they could. That’s how some men shop—enter the store, choose a product, make the payment and get out fast.
But female gatherers were not in such a hurry. For them, selecting food was also a social event where they bonded with other females of the tribe, inspecting every bush and tree with care and choosing the best quality of food available.
According to the socio-biologists, women are linked to shopping in the same way that men are linked to sports. Men are the "hunters" (conquering stuff) and women are the "gatherers" (finding stuff).
Later when glamorous, well decorated "department stores" were opened, shoppers were encouraged to come to the stores for pleasure and conversation.
It wasn't just to "buy things," they were encouraged to "make their own choices."
1
Ask yourself--Do I really need it?
Each time her desire to shop comes, she will ask herself questions like: Do I have this? Do I Need This? Is this really necessary?
For someone addicted to shop, they tend to buy something that they don’t actually need it. For instance, Rebecca has bought a lot of clothes but end up will use only few of them.
And here are some other tips for you to overcome online shopping addiction:
2
Uninstall All Shopping Applications
That way, every time there is a desire to shop online, you cannot immediately open the application, but must open it from a browser that is relatively not as convenient as the application.
3
Apply The Waiting Period
Every time you shop online, just put the items you want in the shopping basket. But, do not immediately complete the transaction.
Apply a waiting period of at least three days to consider whether the items you really need.
