This is Everyday Grammar. I'm Kaveh.
And I'm Lucija. We haven't done an episode on direct contrasts, have we?
Let me think. I don't think so.
Well then, it's about time!
While and Whereas can be used to show direct contrast when something is exactly the opposite of something else.
Tim is happy, while Tom is sad.
Mary likes living in the city, while Martha prefers the countryside.
While and Whereas are conjunctions. They connect two clauses.
Tim is happy. Tom is sad.
Mary likes living in the city. Martha prefers the countryside.
Well, that's fairly easy to understand.
But I don't hear many people use Whereas when they speak.
That's because whereas occurs more in formal English writing.
In the northern hemisphere, July and August are hot summer mouths,
whereas in the southern hemisphere, they are cool winter months.
He loves to travel, whereas his wife prefers to stay at home.
Here is a tip: When expressing contrasts, While and Whereas mean the same thing.
But you should know that While is also commonly used with time clauses and means "during the time."
But I think we should save that for another episode.
And that's Everyday Grammar.
