Apparently squeaking is a thing that caterpillars can do.

An adorable video is trending right now that depicts a man gently placing his thumb and forefinger on either side of a moth larva and the caterpillar going, squeak!

Now if you're like me, you may be wondering how and why caterpillars make this sound exactly.

I mean, it's not like they have lips, or even vocal cords.

As it turns out, caterpillars have little holes on the sides of their bodies that they used to breathe called spiracles.
事实证明，毛毛虫在它身体上有许多小孔这个用来呼吸的叫做呼吸孔。
To make these little squeaks, they squish their body together, and force air out of the holes, making a whistling or squeaking sound.
它们制造小的吱吱声，通过把它们的身体挤压在一起，迫使空气从孔中排出来，制造出了哨子声或者吱吱的声音。
And apparently, the noises are used to defend themselves from birds.

The sound spooks them.
