有时越是心理有阴影，无法正视自己的人越喜欢用愤世嫉俗、叛逆不羁的表象来保护自己，电影中的数学天才威尔就是这样。他把前来辅导的心理专家要讲的理论倒背如流，借此羞辱并气走他们。在与心理学教授肖恩的初次交锋也是如此。他借由肖恩办公室里挂的一幅画主观的评判了对方的一切，以此激怒肖恩教授。事实是他的确做到了。但与兰博教授一番交谈之后，肖恩教授和Will进行了下面的谈话。这一次，无话可说的人，变成了Will。
Sean: Thought about what you said to me the other day. About my painting. Stayed up half the night thinking about it. Something occurred to me. I fell into a deep, peaceful sleep and haven't thought about you since. You know what occurred to me?
Will: No.
Sean: You're just a kid. You don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about.
Will: Why, thank you.
Sean: It's all right. You've never been out of Boston.
Will: Nope.
Sean: So if I asked you about art, you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo? You know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations. Him and the pope. Sexual orientation. The whole works, right?
I bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel.
You never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling. Seeing that.
If I ask you about women, you'll probably give me a syllabus of your personal favorites.
You may have even been laid a few times.
But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman...and feel truly happy.
You're a tough kid.
I ask you about war, you'd probably throw Shakespeare at me, right?
"Once more into the breach, dear friends. " But you've never been near one.
You've never held your best friend's head in your lap... and watch him gasp his last breath lookin' to you for help.
If I asked you about love, you'd probably quote me a sonnet, but you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes.
Feelin' like God put an angel on Earth just for you, who could rescue you from the depths of hell.
And you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her be there forever.
Through anything. Through cancer.
And you wouldn't know about sleepin' sittin' up in a hospital room...for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes...that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you.
You don't know about real loss, 'cause that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself.
I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much.
对话开头，Sean教授坦言之前Will对他的画进行的评论刺激了他，并且stay up half the night think about it. stay up, 熬夜。花了半个晚上考虑Will所说的话。但是，一个事实occurred to me, occur to有realize, aware of也就是“意识到；想到”。是什么事实让Sean教授随后放下这个问题，并安然入睡了呢？是You're just a kid. You don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about. 你不过是个孩子。你对你所说的话根本没有the faintest idea, faint，模糊的。根本不知道自己在说什么。

Will从没有离开过波士顿，所有的知识都是花一块五到公立图书馆看书得来的。正因为如此，肖恩教授说如果我和你谈艺术，你可能会give me the skinny on every art book，把每本艺术书都粗浅的讲给我听。说起米开朗琪罗如数家珍，但你从却没亲自站在西斯廷教堂里看他在天花板上的彩绘。
如果我和你谈女人，you'll probably give me a syllabus of your personal favorites。Syllabus纲要；摘要。句子意思为“你可能会给我列出一堆你个人的偏好”，你甚至可能have even been laid a few times。Laid, lay的过去分词，有产蛋，产卵的意思，在这里指代have sex。但是，不会懂得与心爱之人在一起时的快乐。
如果我们谈论战争，你可能throw Shakespeare at me，throw…at，将……扔向……。当然扔莎士比亚是不可能的。能甩过去的只能是莎士比亚的名句“Once more into the breach, dear friends.”“共赴战场，亲爱的朋友。” Breach, “缺口”。可是，从未亲身体验过战友在身边逝去的痛苦。
如果我和你谈爱情，你可能会引用一段sonnet，十四行诗，但你一定不会Known someone that could level you with her eyes。理解这句话需要掌握level的含义。本句中，level用作动词，意思是“摧毁；击倒”。比如这个例子：The trees were leveled by the typhoon. 树木被台风刮倒了。电影中的这个定语从句可以翻译为“知道有一个可以用眼神就摧毁你的人。”从这一句也看出Sean对亡妻的爱。他认为妻子是上帝专门派给他的天使，是能够rescue you from the depths of hell从地狱深处将你拯救出来的人。
在妻子罹患癌症住院期间，教授一直陪伴左右，以至于护士们都知道，医院规定的visiting hour“探视时间”是didn’t apply to me. Apply to “适用于；运用于”，一个固定搭配。再比如：
The laws apply to everyone irrespective of race, creed or colour. 这条法规适用于任何人，不分种族、信仰或肤色。
肖恩教授说Will一定不了解真正的失去是什么感受，因为这样的情况只能occurs when you love something more than you love yourself. 这里occur与开始出现的occur to不同，表示“发生；出现”。这样的情况只能在你爱一个人胜过爱自己的时候才会发生。但是，I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. Dare to do，敢于做某事。我怀疑你敢不敢像那样去爱。
我想，听了这样的质问，再狂妄不羁的人都可能会低下头来，思考自己是不是真的如自己想的那么无所不能。对话还没有结束，肖恩教授找威尔谈话的目的也不是反击，而是希望对方能坦诚的与自己交流。对话的下半部分我们下期一同欣赏。再见。
