Most schools have rules in place about when you can use a phone, and some have decided to ban them completely.

At this school, pupils have to put their phone in a locker until home time.
But other schools have more high tech ways of staying phone-free.
"So you walk into school and then you put your phone in, and you press the button and it locks it.
And then when you come out of school, you press the button against the magnet and it opens."
These kids think that a phone-free school has lots of benefits.
"Like, I've been forced off my phone at breaktime and forced to, like, socialise with people."
New research has looked into the effects of phone use in young people, suggesting that banning them in school might not make much of a difference on how pupils feel or perform.
I'm speaking to the BBC's Education Editor Branwen Jeffreys to find out more.

"So, Branwen, this new research, in a nutshell, what does it say?"

"They compared schools that have a smartphone ban and schools which allowed them to be used during break times, for example.
And they found no difference at all in mental well-being of the teenagers, or in how their grades were in maths or English."
"And what did it say about phone use outside of school?"
"There is some evidence that spending less than two hours a day on a phone, or on social media, can make a difference to your mental well-being.
This raises a big question -- if school bans don't make much difference, maybe it's what's going on at home that really matters."
So the researchers do say there's a lot more still to learn, but we might see a big debate about what parents and the government should do."
