Portugal's ex-PM Socrates arrested in corruption probe

Portuguese police have arrested former Socialist prime minister Jose Socrates in a corruption probe. The Prosecutor General's office says he and three others were arrested in an investigation of suspected tax fraud, corruption and money-laundering. Socrates was detained late Friday. Authorities say he'll be brought before a criminal judge forquestioning over suspicious banking operations and money transfers. Socrates resigned as prime minister in 2011, as an escalating debt crisis forced him to request an international bailout... imposing painful austerity on Portugal. Representatives of the center-left Socialist party could not immediately be reached for comment on Socrates' arrest.

'Big gaps' remain in Iran nuclear talks ahead of deadline

Behind closed doors in Vienna, negotiations over Iran's nuclear program are intensifying ahead of a November 24 deadline to reach a deal. At stake is the resolution of a 12-year standoff between Iran and the West over Tehran's nuclear ambitions. At a news conference with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is cautious.

Western officials have accused Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear bomb. Iran says its program is purely peaceful. One key issue is uranium enrichment, which has both civilian and military use. Another issue is sanctions. Iran wants sanctions to be ended quickly while the West wants a gradual approach. As the talks continue through the weekend, a European source says discussions about possibly extending the deadline could begin Sunday.

Ferguson awaits grand jury decision

The streets of Ferguson Missouri were filled with community members Saturday night as they await a grand jury decision on the case of a white police officer who fatally shot a black teen here over the summer. People in this town and across the country are waiting to learn the fate of officer Darren Wilson who shot and killed 18 year old Michael Brown.Many in the community have called for his arrest. If he is not indicted, local and state officials fear the community's outrage maybe result in violence. One protester said regardless of the decision, the public should remain calm.

Brown's death triggered weeks of sometimes violent protests. Officer Wilson has maintained he fired at Brown in self defense, although witnesses say Brown had his hands up when he was killed.
