Obama picks confidante Rice as national security adviser
No Congressional approval needed this time. U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday chose his close confidante, Susan Rice, as his new national security adviser, in a move that increases White House control over U.S. foreign policy.
U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "I am extraordinarily proud to announce my new national security adviser, our outstanding adviser to the United Nations, Susan Rice..." Her appointment also defies Republicans, who criticized Rice's handling of last year's deadly attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, and all but derailed her nomination for Secretary of State. This time, Obama avoids a congressional fight over Rice, because the post of national security advisor doesn't require Senate confirmation.
SUSAN RICE, THE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS WHO IS APPOINTED AS THE NEW NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR, SAYING: "Mr. President, thank you so much. I am deeply honored and humbled to serve our country as your national security adviser." Rice replaces outgoing Tom Donilon and is expected to play a high-profile role in defending Obama's foreign policy, particularly in Syria.
Pakistan PM Sharif calls for an end to drone strikes
Speaking before parliament as Pakistan's new Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif calls for an end to U.S. drone strikes aimed at militants.
PAKISTAN PRIME MINISTER NAWAZ SHARIF SAYING: "This daily business of drones has to stop immediately. Other countries must respect our sovereignty as we respect their sovereignty." Ousted in a bloodless military coup in 1999, Sharif won enough seats in the May 11 general elections for his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party to operate without a coalition. The 63-year-old was formally elected in parliament with an overwhelming majority.
SPEAKER OF NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, SARDAR AYAZ SADIQ, WHILE MAKING ANNOUNCEMENT, SAYING: "Honourable Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif sahib has secured 244 votes. Accordingly, Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif sahib is declared to have been elected as the prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan." Chanting supporters outside parliament hold up a lion, a symbol for Sharif in the election. Sharif's government faces a lions share of challenges ---- militancy and sectarian violence, chronic power shortages and a near-collapsed economy....and strained relations with key ally Washington over whether drone strikes have an end in sight.
