On 27 June 2012, China became only the fifth country to send a manned submarine into the deep sea when its ship, the Jiaolong, reached a depth of 7,062 metres in the Pacific Oceans Mariana Trench.

Three men, Ye Cong, Liu Kaizhou, and Yang Bo, took part in this eleven-hour mission, which saw them spend three hours on the ocean floor.
