Unit 7 Living with diseases Listening
Jane works at the Center for Disease Control and prevention as a disease detective.
Listen to the tape and answer the questions.
The Diseases detective.
Jane is one of the experts at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
People at the center study how the diseases start and spread,
and as the names shows, try to control and prevent diseases.
We ask Jane about her work.
Part One Well,I have to be a detective.
I go to a place where disease has broken out
and I look for clues about the diseases.
I try to find as much information as I can about what happened.
Who were sick, what are the signs,do they have a fever,
a headacheor a sore throat, when did they get sick?
When I have collected the information,
I use it to find out what caused the problem.
We can use what we learn to prevent others from getting sick.
Jane, and other disease detective at the center do their jobs in different ways.
Some detectivesworking in laboratories where they examine test and samples.
Others travel to towns or villages
where there are diseases and talk to people who are sick.
All of the experts of the center know that their work is important.
If they do their jobs well, they will save lives.
Part Two
A:How often do you actually go to the places where a new disease has broken out?
B:Oh,It happens every now and then, probably about every three month or so.
A:How do you find about new diseases?
B:We will usually hear from doctors and hospitals.
If they notice anything strange, they will give us a call and ask for a help.
If we think it is necessary,we'll go to the place when people are getting sick.
A:Are you afraid of catching the diseases you are studying?
B:Well, yes sometimes, but we are always very careful.
If you know what you are doing, you can protect yourself.
Besides,I'm more afraid of what might happen if we don't find out what kind of disease it is.
A:What can ordinary people do to protect themselves?
B:The best thing you can do is simply to wash your hands often,
and try to avoid crowded places.
Wearing a mask over your face may help,
but it is probably not necessary unless you are caring for a sick person.
It is also important to see a doctor if you get sick,
so that you don't spread disease without knowing it.
