Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will become governor of New York when Cuomo's resignation takes effect in two weeks. The centrist Democrat from western New York will become the state's first female governor.
The US Senate has approved the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan, which provides new spending for roads, bridges and broadband internet and other public works projects. The bill now heads to the House while the Senate turns to an even bigger $3.5 trillion spending package.
Tens of thousands have fled their homes in northern Afghanistan in recent days to escape fighting. Afghan insurgents targeted a police station in Farah on Tuesday as Taliban militants continued to capture more parts of the country.
