Terror for the 164 passengers on board a burning plane, visible in the distance, moments after the Boeing 737 crashed. Daylights showing the stricken aircraft. Only the undercarriage and wing damaged. 18 people were injured, including three children. We didn't feel the plane was slowing down, says this survivor, that it skidded beyond the runway, banked right and caught fire. A firefighter attending the blaze died of a heart attack.
People just jumped, grabbed children and fled. Russian media reporting the plane was trying to land early Saturday at the Olympic city of Sochi in strong winds and heavy rain. The crash comes amid rising concern about the safety of air travel in economically struggling Russia. In February, 71 people were killed when a commercial airliner crashed after taking off from Moscow. Tonight an investigation has been launched into suspected "inadequacies" that may have caused this latest dramatic accident.
